Have finally given up on windows based pc and have decided to change to Mac, the only question I have is should I wait a couple of months until the new leopard OS system is out?

    No.
If anything, wait until the new iMac are out, but they'll be bugged by hardware faults. Just buy now. There's always going to be something new out in a couple of months.

If you need now, buy now.

Leopard is not out till late October so you are holding out for 3 more months, by which time there may be a new processor about to come out, new updates, new RAM, more memory, software etc etc. In other words, there is always something else to hold off for.

If it's a Macbook you're looking at then buy now. But if it's an iMac you should wait another while. Leopard is not worth waiting for.

But then the OP is likely going to have to shell out another €125 or whatever it'll retail at.

I'd wait, depending on what machine s/he wants, because by then the rev 2 "new" iMac will be out, or any hardware probs will be sorted an the prices will either drop or you get more bang for yer buck.

I suppose but Leopard's a fairly non-essential upgrade imo and if he can't afford it in October it can wait. As I've said before people should plan their purchases around the hardware not the software. By the time Leopard comes out there'll be something else to wait for, it's endless.

And after the next imac revision there probably won't be another till next summer. If there's any problems with the new imac's they'll be minor and Apple will take care of them, it's not like he's buying an xbox :D.

You should check out www.macrumors.com , it has a buyers guide for Apple products that might interest you :)

    Subjective in the extreme.

I've got five words for you:

    Time Machine
    Parental Controls
    Spaces

These three alone make it indispensable.

As for the revisions, Apple trot 'em out pretty quickly, Rev A, B and Cs often happen within months so I guess if I was in the market for a new metal iMac, I'd wait the few months for rev B and also get 'pard thrown in.

No. Do not wait. Buy now.

I moved to the mac world just before xmas,i was 8 years using windows, (what a pain in the BLANK those 8 years were) Anyway, when i came in here just before xmas 2006 i asked that same question as you just did right now, but the professor said i should buy and not wait, so i did. Thank god i did buy cause i would still be waiting for the new OS. ( it was delayed because of the iphone)

I keep saying this to everyone -- give yourself at least 6 weeks to get to know the new system you are joining and it's all uphill from then on.

It is true when people say that there is always something to wait for in the computer world, ( things move so fast in the computer world) one could be waiting forever, and wondering. You are about to buy a computer that is just out of this world, a computer that no windows computer can touch.

I will upgrade to the new system i guess, i like the look of 'time machine', 'spaces' and 'mail'. I reckon mail is going to my favourite.

I'm looking forward to some of the extra features too but come on, indispensable? Not remotely imo. Don't let Steve's RDF or Apple's marketing fool you, feature-wise Leopard is a minor upgrade.

No they don't. It's usually 6 to 9 months between revisions. Even when the redesigned iMac G5 was released in August 2004, it was May 2005 before it was updated.

Do you religiously make on- and off-site backups? No?
    see Time Machine

Do you have kids who are too young to know where/when to surf? At a guess, no.
    see Parental Controls

Do you work in multi-environments simultaneously?
    see Spaces

And no, I have a very healthy disregard for the RDF and the swallowing whole thereof.

I'd agree with the 'if you need it now, buy it now' sentiment. I wouldnt wait for Leopard. As for the discussion on Leopard features, there are a few things I really like, spaces is very handy, really like the new look and feel, stacks was fun for a few minutes, time machine I haven't bothered to try yet. Overall, some nice bits but nothing majorly exciting. Considering the build up to it.

Depends on what you want to buy too. MacBooks/Pros are safe enough as they have just had revisions. iMac is nailed on for a new form factor - DO NOT buy first revision, and thats coming from ex tech Support. Rumours that a new beefier Mac mini is on the way - €120+ for Leopard on top of 6 or 800 for a mini becomes very steep, whereas its not too bad against the more expensive models.

Fair point, and a good one at that!
