Power problem with Dell Laptop

    Hi.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1300, recently, the power supply failed and I brought a generic power supply for it. However, it never really fitted properly and has ended up ruining the DC jack which means it won't work from a mains supply now.

I brough to a nearby shop and they said the same thing as my father; It needs be sent back to dell to be fixed. However, the laptop is out of warrenty and I saw another topic here via search engine where a person was going to be charged nearly 400 Euro to have similar repairs done to a similar model of laptop. ( An inspiron 1100 I believe )

I'm just wondering, would be better off buying a new laptop or sending the one I have at the moment it off to dell for repairs?

    Thanks in advance.

take a pic of the damage, if the mother board is cracked its prob bust, if not its an easy job (for me anyway).

dont mind them people who say its 400e to fix, thats bollocks.

I have exactly the same problem with a Packard Bell. Have been told the same about the motherboard. Legs11, would it be possible to maybe solder the power lead permanently into the DC jack ? Or solder wires to motherboard ? Have another lappie and PC in the house, so this one could be set somewhere and left there.

soldering directly...hmmm. wouldnt do this myself. just solder on a new dc jack. of course you need to take the laptop apart, carefully and get a good quality soldering iron and not fry the mother board. but people who see a broken dc jack and say, ohh thats 400quid need a nice swift kick up the ass.

    i would charge just 100e:D

400 on a good day with the right promotion would buy you a new one.

Hi again everyone, to fix it, would cost over 400 Euros, just as I thought!

However, my father was able to fix by re - routing the DC power to another nearby source by soldering the wire onto the motherboard, he said there was cracks in there as well. He killed up the on-board mouse pad, though. ( Good thing I use a mouse, those things annoy me to no end anyway! )

Only drawback is that the laptop, due to this re - routing of its power and its fragile nature, can't really be moved now. So much for it being portable!
