every year I go on holidays and get eaten alive by mossies. Going to Austria in 2 weeks and dreading it because I get eaten here. Anyone have any idea of what is the best insect repellant???!!

if you are going to central/eastern europe also remember that lyme's disease is endemic amongst the tick population there so stay out of long grass in shorts if you are leaving the city.

Thanks for that. Probably be going out into the countryside a good bit. Its terrible because every year I end up bitten from head to toe and most of the time end up having to end up getting antibiotics as I react badly to the bites! Here's hoping the Austrian mossies will like me and stay away!

Eat lots of Oranges before you go, it comes out of the skin and repels them.

Its the same with garlic?Or is this just another old wives tale?

I've heard the same thing about Vitamin b and Chillies.

Jungle Formula is one of the best repellents in my experience. Don't get something that's more than 25% deet as it doesn't absorb into the skin very well. Long trousers and sleeves are also good but unpopular way to avoid getting bitten :)

Things containing citronella and various other essential oils do work but I prefer to get chemical on their bitey asses, the more toxic the better too.

Tiger Balm is great for taking the itch out of any bite you get.

There was a piece on a program on the BBC a couple of days ago on this. It involved someone using a number of remedies and putting his arm into a perspex box full of mozzies. Basically, garlic didn't work at all, a citronella based product worked quite well but not 100% and with Deet the mozzies just didn't come near him.
