A very long shot I know, but has anyone stayed in the American Hotel in Amsterdam recently? If so what is the extent of the renovations that are taking place? Is the place like a building site or is it reasonably unobtrusive.

I intend to do that, but would like an opinion from someone who actually stayed there recently.

I actually stayed there about 6-8 weeks ago. The hotel itself is very central but is a little away from the 'main' area where you're likely to get noise at night etc.. if you're going for a relaxing break of course! ;)

When I was there, you have one section which overlooks a canal which was untouched, and the other side of the hotel had a lot of scaffolding up outside the café area. It was all pretty low key though and quite unobtrusive overall.

The hotel was expensive enough tbh, and the rooms while nice and comfortable etc are in need of a little 'freshening up' so I hope that's next on the agenda. The bar is quite small and wasn't too nice but the restaurant was excellent as well as the staff.

On the whole, I would recommend it - but ask them to ensure you get a room with a balcony as its nice to sit out in the evening time.

Feel free to ask more if you wish!

    Enda
