Hernia surgery and recovery times

I'm about to go in for Hernia surgery next week (it looks like a midget is pushing his thumb out through my belly button - take THAT diagnosis!) and although I have got my head around how they intend to repair the site I am concerned about the length of time, pain and other things involved in the recovery process.

Can anyone here speak from experience regarding the length of time it will take (25 year old caucasian male, obese, sedintary lifestyle)?

How about the ammount of pain (pilonidal sinuses hurt like hell and I'm wondering if this is goiong to suck quite as bad)?

    Thanks in advance.
