I've been lurking around this forum for ages now and have wanted to get a good camera so *finally* I have about 1200 europeans to satiate my itchy trigger finger.

    My problem is this:

I want a full frame camera to take jaw droppingly awesome landscape shots but they're very 'spensive them full framers, aren't they?

I was about to get a 400d, nifty fifty, and sigma 10-20 or canon 10-22 from kea but then I read a thread (sorry cant find it now) where Rymus was telling 4400mhz (or something) that if she envisages trading up camera body in the future then the money spent on ef-s lenses will be wasted.

I think I'd agree, Mister Rymus.

So, since a full framer is out of my reach at the moment, what would be the best camera to get so that when I trade up to full frame I wont have to flog my lenses for pennies on ebay?

edit - sorry for thread title - meant to go back n fix it before I posted

You have a few choices - 1) don't buy EF-S lenses. That seems the simple choice.

I have a 20D and bought the 10-22 EF-S. I don't consider this a waste, even if I upgrade to a 1d Mk III or a 5D. I would still keep the 20D as a 2nd body and could always use the EF-S on that.

When you upgrade in future - will you replace the old body or simply just buy a new body?

Plenty for you to think about.

    Ye've made my Monday.

Buy a camera, any camera that'll take good photos. Spend the big money on lenses. If you see yourself trading in the camera soon for a full frame camera, dont buy ef-s, as Paul said... and as I've said numerous times.

350/400/10/20/30D are all very capable cameras and if you don't feel like shelling out for a new body given that you might be upgrading, threre are lots of lovely second hand 20D's, 350D's and possibly a few 30D's once the replacement model comes out.

If you like the look and feel of the 400, go for it. Get the uber plastic lens, invest in either a sigma 10-20 or even a canon 16-35 if you really feel you'll be going full frame and can justify the extra money and keep the savings going for the rest of the L collection :D

ah I see... so I can get the 400d and then just buy non ef-s lenses for it and they'll work fine when I upgrade to a 5d (or 0000.05d by the time I have the money). I thought that... doesn't matter what I thought!!

I just read this too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF-S_lens_mount ... looks like I'm getting a brand spanking new 400d!!!

    Thanks for the help guys.

rymus, uber plastic == nifty 50?
16-35 == I'd love to.... story of my life: champagne tastes - lemonade pockets :(

    ...

aw no. kea have the 400d "body only" in stock. I know the kit lens is supposed to be a bit crap. Is there a cheap comparable lens I could get?

I have a 20D. It can take EF and EF-S lenses. I have about 7 lenses, and only one is EF-S (10-22mm).

It really depends what you spend your money on.

There are many cheaper options - non-L lenses, Sigma or Tamron lenses too.

This might seem a bit backword, but why not go with a 3mm film camera?

You can use all your full frame lenses etc, scan the negs & work on a computer.

Ef-S lenses won't go out of business though. Canon invested too much into them. If someone bought a 30D & a couple of grand on ef-s lenses to find out they couldn't be used anymore, what's making them stick with Canon?

if you really want the kit lens I'm sure you can pick one up on ebay second hand quite cheaply. Either that so someone here looking to off load it might sell it to you.

well I don't "like it" as such... it's just that I'm a complete noob so wouldn;t mind having it to play with. If I can get it for just a few squid more then I think it'd be good value for me.

    of course.
Its not that bad a lens and its great for learning.

If someone wants a kit 18-55 EF-S then I've a spare sitting around at home. Make me an offer, and I'll beat any ebay price. :)

I've already asked kea will they be getting the 400d+kit lens in and how much it'll be.

Once they get back to me we can work out a fair price that'll be of mutual benefit!

The 18-55 kit lens is an OK lens, not great, but adequate. If you're on a learning curve with an slr, it's a very cheap way to get a (moderately) wide angle lens if you go for a 400D.

I have a Sigma 10-20mm, and love it. I'm in the camp that the APS-C sensors aren't going to disappear overnight. There will probably never be any L lenses for it, but full frame sensors are always going to be more expensive to produce, and there will be a market for them, albeit maybe a consumer oriented market (which after all, we all are!)

All the Canon EF L lenses will fit the 300D-350D-400D and the 20D/30D bodies. These cameras can take EF and EF-S.

You are not limited, in fact you have a wider range of lenses.

Only the other bodies (5D, 1D) can only take the EF lenses.
