    Hello,

I was wondering if a few of you could give me your opinions on the following please?

I want to buy myself a decent camera and I have decided on either (these are probably very typical options):
    Canon 350D
    or
    Nikon D40

    Now for the questions:
    What would you recommend?
Where would you recommend to buy it?

Theres an almost identical thread about 8 lines below this one

This is completely subjective - people who use canon will more or less recommend canon and the same goes for people who use nikon. The standard recommendation is to try both in a shop and get a feel for them then make your decision that way (presuming you have already compared the specs of both).

Since I have a D40 I suppose my view is biased... I really like this little Nikon - it's been with me for 6 months and I've taken around 11,000 photos with it (it really is fun to use).

The 350D is a very capable camera too and probably the better selection if you want to buy AF capable primes right away (I believe that Nikon will produce AFS primes soon enough...)

The D40 has a great shutter sound, is very small and light (with a good handgrip - I'm not so sure about the Canon one).

Please don't ignore the Pentax and Olympus options - they've recently introduced some great cameras too.

As to where to buy - if you're going to the US anytime soon that's the best option. Failing that online from Hong Kong seems pretty good too. Irish prices seem to be very high (my D40 kit cost me E480 when it first came out, back in Ireland the prices were around E600) :(
