After a very tough squad training class yesterday, i woke up this morning with a really bad neck. I cant turn my head completely to the left and only partly to the right. ive used tiger balm and had a hot bath but its not easing up at all. Anyone got any tips?

when you are 1st sore the worst thing to do is heat like hot baths, have cold showers and ice the neck and any sore areas for 10 mins at a time, apart from that gentle stretching and massage are helpful-hope that helps..

Unless you've done serious damage, it will probably sort itself out if you give it a few days to a week to rest.

In case it doesn't go without saying though, if you can't turn your head, don't do anything stupid like driving.

Just wanted to reiterate this. The pain is caused by inflammation and heat will do nothing to help that. I usually take a small amount of ibuprofen (neurofen, but not neurofen plus) when I'm like that, as it works as an anti-inflammatory and painkiller. It is harsh on the stomach though.

Aspirin based drugs work that way too (disprin etc.).

I'm not advocating this....just telling you what I'd do etc. :)

OP, my first question is - did you do a proper cool down after training?

As others have said, barring actual damage it'll sort itself out in a few days.

Also, as Khannie mentioned, neurofen can be beneficial. I use neurofen gel on such things myself.

Thanks for all the advice / cooments

Based on the first reply i immediately stopped with the heat and started using the cold packs. It eased the pain and also helped my neck relax. Ive also done some gentle stretching and it is slowly getting better. Im not normally one for painkillers ( not because i dont think i need them but because they usually dont have any effect ), but i eventually relented and took some Neobrufen which is an anti inflammatory as well as painkiller. I am still going to give it the rest of the week ( no point making it worse and being out for longer )so no training for me.

Oh and Clive yes we did a cooldown. I'm pretty sure the pain came from the hours worth of throws we worked on, i obviously need to do more work on my breakfalls.

    Thanks again!!

I suffer pretty much constantly from neck and back pain, but you don't hear me moan about it on internet forums...

No sorry I have a serious answer. Be careful with the neck and back and do nothing for a while. Let it heal and if it's getting no better by the end of the week seek professional attention.
