Abandoning the gimp finally

I've been using the gimp for a lot of my post-processing up to now. Main reasons were it seems to do most of what I need and also I like to support open-source software. Overall I was relatively happy with it .
Lately though I'm beginning to think I should move to photoshop. The main reasons for this are the lack of progress regarding gimp enhancements, but more significantly, the sheer volume of photoshop-related content to be found out there. Most forums I visit assume you're using photoshop and therefore all the hints, tutorials, workflow, techniques etc. are based on it and I'm beginning to feel I'm missing out as a result.
It seems that some of the more advanced techniques , such as selective desaturation of an image, are easier to do using the photoshop interface. I know in a lot of cases the techniques being used can be adapted to work with the gimp but that's a lot of extra effort. Also some of the functionality now available in photoshop ( hdr etc.) seem interesting and I would like to try them out.
Has anyone else come to this conclusion or have strong opinions on it?
For those using photoshop where is the best place to acquire it, as the bog standard price seems far too costly for the amount of people who use it?

It was an easy decision for me - I alwas had PS for free :-)
And who knows, I could buy it some time in the future, maybe...

I've been using photoshop for the past year and it's absolutely fantastic, you have such control over your photos. The only downside is the massive price. It may be cheaper if you order it through your company but I'd assume it would still be over €300.Another way to do it is to get a part time job at...say a newspaper company.Being an employee you could just take a loan of it for the night and stick it on your computer. As you are an employee I'm pretty sure this is legal for work purposes at home. Then quit :p That might be taking it too far though ;) Maybe you should just go for Lightroom if you don't want to veer down the other path...

Inibaz: most likely the licence is for one computer.

the only legal way to get cheap photoshop is to grow some children and put them into school ("yes, salesperson, my four year old does need creative suite")... you won't get upgrade prices in future but this is no biggie, just put your kid back in school again (assuming they've been up chimneys earning their keep in the meantime)

I've got a couple of kids but if I take them down from the chimneys then I'd never be able to afford this expensive photograpy lark:D

Smart decision, admitedly THE GIMP is a good piece of software, however; if you're serious about what you're doing whether it's a hobby or for work, Photoshop no questions asked.

Because of the outragously high price most people resort to illegaly download it, so if you insist on buying it via legal means try eBay. Just make sure you're actually getting a legitmate copy, not a downloaded version which any average Joe good aquire.
