BSOD when opening IE

on my brothers laptop (dell lattitude D510) anytime he opens up IE 7 he gets a BSOD with the following error message.


Windows has stopped the following program from running to save your pc yadda yadda etc.


Problem seems to be caused by the following file: runtime2.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA.

One or more of the items you need to remove is a backdoor application can allow attackers to access your computer,
stealing passwords, credit card info, and personal data. From a clean computer, change ALL your on-line passwords for
email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, on-line companies, any on-line forums or groups you belong to.
If you do any on-line banking, or store any financial information on this system, you should immediately call
your financial institution and advise them of the situation so you can secure your accounts. Do NOT change passwords
or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and
transaction information.

The best course of action to take is to reformat your PC as there are a lot of nasty infections on it that we may not even
be able to fully get rid of for sure. The backdoor application has probably changed many settings and infected a lot of files.

However if you want to go ahead and try clean up your PC, then do the following :

* I notice that you have no firewall on your PC, this is extremely dangerous and leaves your PC open to vulnerabilities, so please download and install one of the following programs : ZoneAlarm, Comodo, or
Outpost
Make sure you only use one firewall though. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client, as do AntiVir or avast!.


Now we need to reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.


Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum

Next run HijackThis, click "Do a system scan only" and check these entries if present

ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
• Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
• Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
• Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
• After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

So in your next reply please post the following : the SDFix report, a new HijackThis log, the Dr. Web Cureit report, and tell me how your PC is running now and if you are still having the problems.

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

That's not a stupid question actually, one of the really big tools in the fight against malware will mess up your desktop if you run it on a PC that isn't infected. It's perfectly safe to run SDFix on your PC though, as for Dr. Web Cureit, this is possibly one of the best anti-spyware scanners out there, so it's perfectly safe to use, and I use it as my main spyware scanner program for my PC.

It won't take long to do the necessary steps to fix up your brothers PC, and the longer he leaves it the worse it will get. It has a backdoor infection meaning anything can be done to it.

cool i'll be getting his laptop over the weekend and be fixing it then, just he needs it for tomorrow as he's down in cork.

as for my pc, what's the best firewall for vista ultimate x64bit edition, as far as i was aware there were no firewalls that supported 64bit vista. i used to use sygate on my xp pc which was excellent, and i'd prefer not to use zonealarm if possible.

I'm not sure which firewalls work on your type of Vista, only two I know for sure are ZoneAlarm and Ghostwall(don't know how good this one is sorry). Whenever Comodo gets ported to Vista I would get that, don't think its Vista compatible yet though. If you liked Sygate I would keep an eye on that also, it's supposed to be decent.
