Advice/Opinion - Canon 58mm 250D Close-up Lens

Hi

I'm looking for a reasonably priced present for a friend of mine, and I came across this

Would this work with, and be a good companion for a nifty fifty ? Or would I be better with extension tubes like what Elevn used to us before she splashed out on her macro lens ?

This mate also has a 17-85 so I could always go down the route of getting filters and/or a lens hood for that.

Adny advice very welcome.

I have one of these which I sometimes use on the canon 100mm macro and works well with this lens, but I use the kenko extension tubes alot more. I have'nt used it on any other lens though, personally the kenko extension tubes are a better option as your not resticted by the filter thread size on the front of the lens.

I think bhalash/mark has one of these. It'll get you started off well enough, and you can get away with using it on lenses with a smaller diameter by using step-up rings.

If you've got the fifty, though, the extension tubes are the way to go. Here's mine:

I have one of these. It was brilliant on my Canon A710 P&S. I tried it on my Sigma 70-300 and found it too soft, and I had to stand miles away from my subject to get a good closeup. Are you coming to the Flickr meet tomorrow? I can bring it along if you want to try it out...
