IR Photography

This is a quite simple question.
IR Photography - what the hell?
Why ruin a good photo? What are the attractions to IR photography?

I've hated every IR photo I've seen and I'm pretty sure I could ruin a photograph in photoshop without having to spend money on a lens/filter to do it for me.

What am I not seeing/missing out on?

    S.

    Photographic marmite, tbh.

You either love it or hate it.

well then, I love love love it!

IR photography picks up loads of little details, like leaves and grass and makes them look excellent, imo!

I think even 'bland' photos look pretty cool with IR. If anything it enhances the image for me. :p

That's just the problem. A bland photo is a bland photo. IR cannot paper over poor composition or technique. It's a bit like HDR or any other gimmick. It's got a WOW! factor, and once that wears off you're left with your plain old bland image.

If on the other hand the original pic ticked all the boxes in the first place, and an IR treatment looks better than the original, then why not?

Personally I feel that a lot or IR and HDR images were poor to begin with. The snapper has simply tried to rescue it.

I guess it's down to a matter of personal taste.

It doesn't matter if it is IR, HDR, BW of colour photograph.
It is the picture that counts. There are stupid nothing saying IR pictures BUT there are also wonderful pictures. I love BW photography and some pictures with RED filter are just stunning. They are very close to IR pictures.
I must say that I am stunned by some IR pictures. It is just another way how to have an image of reality.
I am jealous that I cannot do pictures like that sometimes. But it is same for all kind of photographic techniques.
Stupid and selfish is who restricts himself/herself from any kind of art technique. It only shows that he/she cannot do that, he/she is not willing to learn doing that and because of that he despects and underestimates it.
"Everything I don't know and I cannot do is WRONG" attitude doesn't suit to creative people.
Just remember the hassle about digital photography about five years ago. You have digital camer? So you cannot be a photographer!

Sorry for my comment, I am at work and I can't find solution for one problem :-)
