motorbike courier-self employed?

hi, hope somebody can help or advise. thanks!
my husband works as a motorbike courier. he is registered with revenue and so is PAYE and has PRSI deducted. According to revenue, he is not self employed. However, the affordable housing department of a certain county council insists that he is self employed and i'm sure that if we were to look for a mortgage, any bank would have the same view. my husband is really bad at asking for information and i have the job of trying to put all the pieces together. i just don't want to be surprised when we are asked for an audit of the last few years. any knowledge or advice would be great. thanks again.

I did that job years ago and there was always an issue regarding self employment. Eventually, the courier company owners and the revenue got together and agreed a solution, which was that the companies would deduct the taxes due on behalf of the couriers but with the understanding that they were not employee's of the company, the companies were simply a middle man. The idea was to get couriers into the tax band and off the dole (many were working and collecting)I don't know if that understanding is still relevant today as I worked at it in the 90's.In saying that, companies I worked for were more than willing to help out with documentation when it came to buy houses etc, afterall it is simply a p60 or whatever , a simple document signed by an accountant. I'm sure if your hubby checks with his company they'll oblige.

Or try the Couriers forum (But it's not terribly busy these days).

I looked through a few business threads but i'm not sure if it would be a better place, however, if anybody feels the post should be moved, please do so as I have no idea how. Thanks dubtom, I figured that a tax deal had been done to encourage them to go legit and to cover expenses. The courier situation seems to perplex financial institutions with the ammount of tax a courier pays and that they are self employed. Once they hear "self employed", they want records and assets. I was hoping somebody who had been in this situation (mortgage or similar) might be able to help. By the way, you couriers are a great bunch, I'm surprised there aren't more threads.
