If I were to buy a ticket from Dublin to Cork say, could I then come back a different route provided it was no more expensive? I know you can do this in certain situations but I can't find any information on the Irish Rail websites about it.

    Yes is the straightforward answer.

    No and yes

    Purchased For Valid also:
    Dublin - Cork Dublin - Limerick/Dublin - Waterford/Dublin - Tralee

    Dublin - Limerick Dublin - Cork/Dublin - Galway/Dublin - Tralee

    Dublin - Tralee Dublin - Cork/Dublin - Limerick

    Dublin - Waterford Dublin - Cork/Dublin - Rosslare

    Dublin - Galway Dublin - Limerick/Dublin - Westport/Ballina

    Dublin - Westport/Ballina Dublin - Sligo/Dublin - Galway

This only applies to normal single and return tickets so prebooked tickets won't work, and student, weekender and other discounted tickets do not appear valid

Its not on the Irish Rail website, afterall it suits them to rip you off, but it does exist in print http://www.platform11.org/resources/IE_conditions_of_carriage_2004.pdf on the last page

Discounted tickets such as Weekender, Student and Faircard tickets are vaild. A friend and I who travelled to Sligo, ended up returning from Westport a few days later. I was using a Faircard and he was using a Student ticket. We paid the difference in the price with no problems, at Westport station.

It depends fully on getting one of the few members of staff who actually understand the regulations, most don't in my experience

The rule book says 'normal' which implies no discounted tickets, ie open single and returns only, one should thread very carefully on any other type

Where disagreements have occured (despite the passenger being correct in almost all cases) abuse has been hurled, tickets have been confiscated and gardai called by Irish Rail staff. I've been there but I had the rule book with me so I got through with little trouble

Irish Rail don't advertise the list of options open and the flexibilty available to passengers, clearly they don't want you to exploit the rules to your advantage, means more money for them

At the end of the day I stand by my previous post. I used the Westport case as an example, but I have done this on several routes and also friends of mine have done the same with no reported problems. In all cases, I found the ticket office staff to be excellent in issuing me with a new ticket with the excess fare printed onto it. No arguments, no disagreements and no Gardai called to the scene

God, you must have created some stink for the Gardai to be called Marko.

To the OP: Why don't you email IE asking them why this information isn't on the website? Actually we should all email them. The more people who do might get some results.

I've gotten a train to Tralee with a return ticket but ended up in Cork and got the train back from there, no one had any problem with it.
