Omaha low content. Set over set

Was playing Omaha earlier for the first time just at $25 buy-in. Lost two buy-ins in set over set situations TT v QQ and 55 v JJ(both re-raising until all-in on flop). Is this run of the mill in omaha? Is this the omaha equivilant of rookies going broke in holdem with TPTK?

If this is common are small pocket pairs trouble hands in general?
Just trying to save myself some grief

Yes , very common ....I have seen quad over quads more than once... or tonight one guy flopped top flush, another straight flush...

lower set in Omaha is like TPTK on a flushing or straightening board.....

a simple rule I have is , don't bet unless its a bluff or the nuts...

Its easier to spot on a rainbow uncordinated board. But if there is flush draw's there or straight draws it can be tricky not too lose money with middle set.*

Well for me anyway. The concept of folding sets is still difiicult for me too come to terms with being a nl player.

put it this way, if the board reads AK762 rainbow and u have a set of Aces, bet it - otherwise throw away ur set... otherwise u'll end up losing a fortune from guys chassing. o and if u flop a house - bet it as well... letting guys "catch up" can prove very costly...

A set is a strong hand in Omaha just like it is in Hold'Em, but if you're meeting resistance you have to think and figure out where you are, and that's where Omaha gets tricky (and don't listen to anyone who tells you that Omaha is all luck).

If you have 22xx on a flop of 28K rainbow and get raised, unless you're up against a very poor player, then it's a sure bet you're up against a higher set.

If you have 55 on a board of 459 with 2 hearts then you've a very tough decision. Someone could be raising you with a wrap straight draw, the nut flush draw, the top set, maybe the lower set, maybe a combined straight and flush draw. Your decision here will probably win or lose you a lot of money.

One thing I've learned recently is simply not to play the lower pair hands like 22xx, 33xx, 44xx, 55xx, 66xx unless they have something else going for them too. The best you can hope for is to flop bottom set which can be a very tricky and costly hand. For the same reason in Hold'Em it's a good idea to avoid hands like A8, A9 A10 because you can make TPTK and lose a lot of money if you overplay it.

Depends what kind of house. If you have AK on a AAK board you're safe enough. If you have 44 on a JJ4 board then anyone with a J probably has 9 outs to beat you, the same as a flush draw, so you should play it really strongly.

EDIT: I should add that these are just my thoughts. I'm newer to Omaha than Hold'Em and more advanced players might disagree with any or all of what I say about the game.

folding middle set on this board will lose you money

Omaha is more about knowing if you are ahead...i find it easier to read my opponents hand than in HE because of their betting, because of the board and also from what they have played previously. In my opinion a set is very tough to play in omaha, whether it is top set or not. Only the experience of playing will make it easier to play in these positions.
