Right, I have a Dell XPS M1210 with a SONY DVD RW DW Q58A.

I was burning a disc a while ago and after that the drive has been pretty unresponsive. I've tried flashing the firmware, no joy.

Basically, if I put in a game DVD or a video DVD, they will play no problem.

However, put in a CD and it will just spin around, making funny noises like its trying to read the disc but can't.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like the drive is faulty and yes it is possible for the CD or DVD side of the drive to break while the other remains functional. Happened many a time to me over the years.

Damn, oh well, time to go back to Dell.
