    (This may be of interest)

I rang Sky to cancel today. I got offered Sky+ Box & Install for €150 _or_ 10% off for 6 months _or_ 20% off for 12.

For the use I'd make of it Sky+ is still a bit dear and they were sticking to that figure.

So for the moment we cancelled it and will see what the "please come back" offers are like...

I was offered the same a few months ago.
20% off for 12 months but you are commiting to a new 12 month contract.
The days of the 50% off for 6 months are gone now.
I had a good run but good runs gotta end sometime.
The new deals are pretty poor to be honest.

What is the possibility of me ringing up and asking to cancel the movies and they say no problem sir without offering me a discount?

If you handle it correctly they will offer you a deal.
When you call, you are put through to Customer Services (CS). These will only deal with package swaps etc. Tell them you want to cancel because of what ever plausible reason you can think of.
You are then put in contact with Retentions. Now these are the people who can "offer" special deals that are not available to CS. Repeat the reason as to why you wish to cancel in a real soft and realistic tone. Do not ask for a deal straight away. Leave them to offer. Then it's just a case of haggling!
If they say ok I will cancel your sub then you have two options.
    1) Stick with it and wait to see if they offer something before the 30 days are up and if not ring back or
    2) Backtrack and say that you will sit back and re consider what to do, say a bit more research. Try again later.
Only cost is that of a phone call.

When I cancelled earlier this year, she tried to sweeten me by offering me broadband...I was like 'eh you don't off that in the republic of ireland'.

I got offered a credit on my account and 25% off for 6 months. Decided not to take it. This was back in Feb.

LOL. You put her in her place! The speeds they offer seem quite good though -- wouldn't mind if they did start to offer it here too.

You must give 30 days notice of cancellation, you can downgrade to the min package for the 30 days though.

I tried ringing up looking for a discount.

Talked to one guy, told him I wanted to cancel Sky. Then was put thru to another guy. He blabbed on for ages about how great Sky was, but no offer of a discount. I was holding firm, so then he started talking about the cancellation process, still no mention of a discount. So I straight out and asked, "can you make me an offer that might change my mind?".

So he says, "No I can't, we don't do discounts here any more - I could offer you a Sky+ box, but I can't give you anything off your monthly sub".

So I dont know whether I was just unlucky to get through to the wrong guy or I have said something wrong or whether there really has been a change in discount policy, but I got well and truly snookered (I couldnt do without my Sky Sports or my Sky Plus) so just told him leave everything as it is and I'll think about it. :(

I recently cancelled my sports package, no effort by way of offer/discount was made to make me stay.

They only offer discounts if you want to close account. They don't care what package your on. They want to make subscriber targets so they cant afford to lose customers.

that may well be the case now but when i rang to cancel these channels a few months ago the rep i spoke with talked me out of it by offering me sports & movies at a reduced rate for 3months (cant remember exact details). Anyway as i said i didnt ring hoping to be offered anything i just wanted to reduce my costs, sky is far to expensive.

I cancelled the movies a few months ago but got no offers. I then cancelled the multiroom about 3 weeks ago and no offers. Finally I cancelled the whole shebang about 10 days ago (will be decapitated on August 4) and again they offered nothing.

All of the above was done by email whether that makes a difference or not.

I was just onto them and the first guy in retentions offered me a sky+ box for 49 sterling and then the line went dead.

I rang again and got through to a girl who could only do it for 120 euro but in the end after talking to a supervisor she said they would give a credit of €45 to balance things,so essentially sky+ fitted is €75 in total fitted.

    regards

    kieran

Are they doing bad business here or something? I've had the same basic package for years now with no offers anywhere to be seen.

Perhaps not any more. I was threatening to close my account last week and got offered nothing (apart from he said he would have offered me a Sky+ box (not sure if it would have been discounted or free) if I hadnt already had one)
