There is some steam train outings in the coming months in case anyone is interested in taking some photo's ...

For more information see - http://www.rpsi-online.org/events/

I'll probably either travel on or find a suitable location to shoot the one on the 29th July between Dublin and Wexford ... this is the best one scenically ... since the coastal/Wicklow hills railway between Bray and Arklow is pretty amazing ... (anyone who went to Avodale may recall the view of the railway along the walk there) ...

If you are interested let me know ... I can probably get precise times for particular locations for those more interested in taking it from the trackside ... those these things are very prone to delays.

I'd be quite interested alright... There are usually great opportunities for pictures around Greystones as the banks along the south beach still have easy access to the / close to the tracks.

What a horrible dilema you've presented me with!
I want to ride on the train & I want to be in some fantastic location, where I can photograph it in full flight!
    I can't choo choose!

was thinking the same... maybe you could jump out at some stage along the track, run ahead, take your shots and then jump back on the train? That'd add to the excitement I'm sure :D

Notwithstanding chief wiggum's kid and his valentine card ... :p

... they often do what they call fly by's ... where they pull in to a station drop off their passengers ... reverse up ... and come steaming through for photography purposes ... and then back to the station to pick up the passengers ... at least they did this when I was a kid travelling with my dad ... but that was a while ago :o

I was also thinking of Greystone beach .... but another prehaps more dramatic shot is along the Bray to Greystones cliff walk ... you do need a telephoto for this ...

Things were different in the 50's though. :p

Anyway you could find out what the story is these days?

ahem ... if you check the boards photo calendar you will find that I am not quite that old ... :o

Though I do feel about 100 years old!! ... but that's because of all dem candles I burnt at both ends when I was in my 20's ... and 30's ... which I am still in by the way ... at least for 2 more days

Yeah, I remember them doing this at Greystones a few years back alright, wasn't on it myself but a lot of people got off and walked down to the rocks on the beach to look at it and take photos.

Yeah, it's gorgeous there alright (I grew up just there :) ) but like you say, access it tough so you really need a good telephoto lens and good weather for it to look the part.

... my dad is involved in the RPSI .... I'll ask him and revert ...

Ok ... we have a few options for those who are interested ...

    1. Go on the trip ... in which case my dad will check if he can get us a group rate. There are plenty of photo ops along the way ... the trip goes to Rosslare ... so there is along the boardwalk in Wexford town ... on the (one of the last few remaining) turntable in Rosslare ... at Connolly ... or out the window of the train ... :o

    2. I can't get detail information on the times it will be in various places where there are opportunities to shoot ... remembering there will be two opportunities ... one going the returning ... and indeed in some cases you can drive from location to location faster than the train ...

    Anyways ... any interest ?

... or we can get someone to leave a car in Wexford ... and drive back along the route before the train ... but that would be a bit scary ... :D
