Does anyone have a telephone number that I can contact in Rosslare that will be able to give me a price to VRT a car that im looking at importing? The car is not listed in the revenue site and I cannot get hold of anyone in my local office.

    Thanks

You should be able to get the info from any VRT office. List and phone numbers here:

It works for me when I have to question the Revenue with work, you phone, and then ask for the VRO, right?

Keep getting shunted back to Dundalk office - who dont answer the phones.

Now been told to fax it in - no one seems willing to give any info over the phone. All I want is a +- price to know if I should buy this vehicle or not.

Rosslare don't talk to punters directly. They will ALWAYS refer you back to your local VRO

And the online calculator doesn't have the car listed, no?

And neither will they give out phone numbers or email addresses. Public Servants me arse.

    Nope, checked there first.

Managed to speak to a nice lady in Navan. Santry doesnt even answer the phone - get cut off before an agent can answer x 2.

The lady in Navan took the details of the car - should hear by the morning all things going to plan.

I am pretty much commited to taking this car, but would be nice to know what the VRT is. If its too high I might need to reconsider.

    Thanks all for the info.

Hmmm... If it's not on their system they're likely to make a number up on the spot, based on how clean/shiny/fast/rare/valuable it looks. They usually get the price from the list and inspect it for any extras it might have...

They then multiply that figure by 2 and add €345 for good luck.

Thats my concern. Its not that special - but it would tick many of those boxes.

I can only admire your optimism in these overtly cynical times.

If the car's not listed, they generally pull a random nuber out of their ass besed on how flashy the car looks.

From personal experience, getting a new 'statistical code' from Rosslare for a vehicle type/make/model not yet "on the books" (mine was for a limited edition MX-5 (400 made)):

    (i) it takes a while
(ii) it will be bracketed between nearest same make/model/engine sizes
(iii) it won't be outrageously out-of-kilter with comparable cars

Unless you're talking supercar territory of course.

Ive asked someone in the local club where some have been imported prior - seems reasonable (apart from it being total ripoff) ..... Im going to take the car anyways - will work around this somehow.

Thats the car. Keen to hear a 'guess' on what the VRT amount may be. After all - it is a 1992 model.

If it was me I would be taking cars of a similar sterling value & working out roughly how much VRT would be due on these. Do a couple of examples say a mid-late 90's BMW/Merc etc. to get a feel for what would be expected. Fill them into the VRT calculator & see what comes out. Then when the VRO come back with a ridiculous figure you can use these when you are contesting the amount. They will see reason when you show them a decent amount of research.

    e.g.
    1999 z3 2.0L 90k miles, £6k STG, VRT due: €3448
    1995 840Ci 4.0L 82k miles, £6k STG, VRT due: €1576
    1998 323i 2.5L 71k miles, £6k STG, VRT due: €3557
    2001 740i 4.0L 130k miles, £6k STG, VRT due: €3543

So it looks like you should be expecting about €3.5k, of course that's only a guesstimate. But will it be any more of a guesstimate than VRO will gove you????

Absolutely can't believe there's never been a 944 imported before... evar!

Note - if there was, it would show: even my MX-5 (which was the first and only one of its type on IE plates back in 04) is showing as a specific choice ('Berkeley') on the online calculator' drop down menu.

If you're lucky they'll go on age and mileage mostly, and not so much on badge. Fingers crossed for you m8, she's a beaut' alright :)

a lot of mileage on that... pretty pricey IMO

    VRT guess... about 3.5-4k

He might not have paid that much for it ;)

(Why do people always assume punters pay full whack?)
    steve06 wrote:

I'd hazard a tad less, prob around the 2,5k mark (30% of €8k or thereabouts, considering she's a 3.0L and price is verifiable online from multiple sources). Just not sure how much the high miles are going to offset the badge effect for the VRT guys 'n gals...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,809 ✭✭✭✭smash

    I'd say they'll take 30% from 10-12k

as far as the mleage... I'm not sure that they'll really consider it because the car isn't listed on their system. I onced asked a woman in the VRO if they're stsyem is different to the one online and she said "eh no, we use the website too"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭Chaz

Im hoping that its fair bit less than that.

Also - as for the 'price bashing' - not paying full price but not far off. When last have you priced a 944 in Ireland? Secondly - this car is mint with full service history and all costs / receipts from day 1.

At least, thats my 'motivation' as to if its worth the money or not. Plus - what else could you spend €8K on and get something like this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭Chaz

Got a call back this morning as promised ...

    Showroom condition - €2775 :-(
    Average Condition - €2100
    Poor - €1575 ......

    Bagsy! Closest! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭rebel.ranter

To be honest I would argue that it was in average condition simply down to the miles on it. I'm not saying the car is not immaculate but it woudl be the line I wouls take with the VRO.
To a non car enthusiast a car with 165k miles is past it's prime.

Just to re-iterate I think it is very nice & can completely understand why you would buy the car, I'm just giving you ideas for your negotiations with VRO.
Tell them you bought it as a restoration project to keep you busy during the winter. You can be sure it actually will need work!
    Regards,
    Mark

Of course I dont care what the VRO gets told about the car. I dont care if they think its a POS - as long as I pay less- thats all that matters.

Well, was charged €2100 in the end of the day. Car was put down as 'average'. So not for free, but less than it could have been.

All round fcking scam, but nevermind.
