On the first point, I seem to have the exact same stomach as I have always have. Grant it, Ive only been a week in the gym but I was expecting to lose the small double chin I have. Ive been doing 3 hours a day for 4 days since I joined. When will I see some developments?

    I'm 17 and I weighed myself today and I'm 10 and a half stone.

Are you male or female? what height are you? In my opinion 10.5st really aint anything to get worried about..

    I'm male.

I've been doing 45 minute cardio, and 2 hours weight training.

I also cycle to the gym, which takes 45 minutes.

No I really dont no to be honest. I just do the first weights I see. I'm too weak for the free weights, so I just use the light 20 kg weights. Then I use the machines.

I don't know that much about these things, but I would've thought three hour sessions very long for anybody, let alone a seventeen year old! It'll take longer to see results (when exactly woud depend on what you want to get out of it) but take comfort from the fact that the longer it takes you to lose weight, the better your chances of keeping it off. That's why the lose-10-pounds-in-a-week diets never work in the long term.

I know I should get some guidance but if I did, it would take the freedom from the gym away.

what do you mean too weak? Surely there are some low weight dumbells or something. I dont do cardio in the gym and ive pretty much lost weight on weights alone. Get yourself a good programme and know what your doing and which musle your working, rather than randomly picking machines.

If your gonna go every day i reccomend a split programme, namely:

Day 1 : pecs and biceps
    2: triceps and legs
    3: shoulders and back

Thats what i do anyway and it worked for me!

Yeah there is, wait that is a question, will using low weight dumbells increase my strenght? I know it's an obvious question, but I'm interested to know how the muscles develop by using low weights.

A lot of gym instructors tell me its better to do more reps and on a low setting rather than less reps on a high setting

Which I agree with as I remember the 1st time I went to the gym. I was doing weights on a high setting no bother really until I woke up the next with aching muscle pains...not worth it ;)

Of course, well aim to do 8 reps such that nearly fail on the 8th. No point in knocking out one million reps of .5kg.

Did you expect to do nothing and then suddenly one day lift this 20kg weight you speak of? You have to build up to it.

Male or female? How do you intend on getting stronger, no pain no gain.

I'm a male, nothing redicoulously too low. but somewhere I can at least 20 reps. im trying to gain some strength.

I always thought If I woke up with horrible pains the next morning every day after the gym, I was doing something wrong...

Basically, doing a high number of reps (15-20) x 2/3 of a low weights will build toned muscle and increase strength a bit and doing a lower number of reps (8-10) x 2/3 of heavy weights will increase strength more and build bigger muscle.

My weights program is split into 3 days.

    Day1: chest and triceps
bench press, butterflys, tricep dips etc.

    Day2: back and biceps
lat pull downs, chinups, curls etc.

    Day3: shoulders
shoulders presses front and back, lat raises etc.

I don't do much legs weights that often, just sometimes if I feel like it. I usually let my running take care of that.

The thing I found when I started is that I was curling something like 5 kg, for example, then you see some huge ****er next to you curling 20 kg while yawning! And then you just feel like giving up. Just make a program and stick to it, and ask yourself what you want to do in the gym, get fit? Become a huge muscley ****er? Or what?

And you're not going to see any difference after a week! Just keep exercising on a regular basis, when something is getting too easy increase what your doing, whether it's the weight you're lifting, the speed you're running at or whatever.

If you're doing 45 minutes of cardio and you're not tired after it there's something wrong. Give yourself a target for it, run a mile in 10 minutes, then 2 in 20 minutes, then 1 in 9 minutes, then go for 8 minute miles, then try for 2 8 minute miles, and keep going like that.

For the weights it's difficult to to what you "should" be lifting. Doing like weights? Go for something that you can do all 20 reps 3 times without too much difficulty. And for heavier weights try to do a weight where you won't be able to finish your last set of reps (I'd say to get someone to spot you while doing this to be safe).

Your doing something wrong with your diet, you shoud have more protein. For strenght go for 5-8 reps with 3-5 sets. The pain is good, your never going to get totally rid of it but with more protein you can sedate it a little.

Before this turns into a "I can bench press more than you" thread.. What exactly are you hoping for OP?

Loss of weight, toner body or what?

I hate when people say toned, as is like raphael nadal? I would consider him to be "toned", but he certainly doest use low weights high reps.

It depends on your bodyfat for how "toned" you are. The lowed it is the more "toned" you look.

Are you looking for a figure like cristiano ronaldo? Who just has very low bodyfat? Awesome lats tho.

If your looking for muscle defenition just loose bodyfat. Ive had more success losing bodyfat from lifting heavy, rather than lifting light. And yes i have tried both.

Well, how could I put this..I'm not really fat. I have small bits of fat around the torso area, if that makes any sense to you....

And that was most awkwardest reply I ever made;)

LOL.. small bit of fat - get over it and stop trying to hijack the thread..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,169 ✭✭✭ironictoaster

well, it's loose fat, feck it I'm gonna try maxi twist's theory of simple heavy weight lifting. I'll survive!

I don't want to be a ****house, just have good strength and fitness.

I'm quite fit but still a little fat. Just have to add I probably am being hard on myself calling myself fat but ah well.

I know if I lose any of the extra weight I have my speed should get better thus making me extremely fast.--I was boasting there.

i dont do any gym work, i have toned myself by doing what i like best, . i find that running and chin ups (palms facing away) have the best toning effects on my whole body. however cycling and press-ups (with weights) really help to give me some power.
ive started using a powerball (gyroscope) and the effects on your forearms is noticeable within 3 or 4 days.
im male 6' 1" and 11 and a half stone.
