I've seen these birds all my life but shame on me I don't know what they are called, so maybe one of you nice people can right a wrong, the guys in question are a little bit larger than a sparrow, black and white with a long black tail

yep, sounds like a pied/white wagtail, or Glasóg Shráide if you are feeling bilingual.
