Channel 4 group gets UK digital radio licence

LONDON, July 6 (Reuters) - A group led by Britain's Channel 4 has won the right to launch 10 new national digital radio stations in a deal it hopes will boost the industry and challenge the dominance of the BBC.

Media regulator Ofcom said on Friday it had awarded a digital radio multiplex licence to 4 Digital Group which is led by Channel 4 Radio and includes BSkyB (BSY.L: Quote, Profile , Research), Emap (EMA.L: Quote, Profile , Research) and Carphone Warehouse (CWP.L: Quote, Profile , Research).

Britain already has dozens of channels on the digital audio broadcasting (DAB) platform from the BBC [BBC.UL] and others.

Channel 4, publicly-owned but funded by advertising, is known for its edgy programmes and made headlines around the world earlier this year when some housemates in its Celebrity Big Brother house abused Indian actress Shilpa Shetty.

Under its plan, Channel 4 Radio will operate three national digital stations: one aimed at 15-to-29 year-olds; one on current affairs and an all-music station.

Other stations will include Talk Radio from the Ulster Television Group (UTV.L: Quote, Profile , Research), a music station from Emap based on the Closer magazine aimed at women, and Sky News Radio, which will be a joint venture between BSkyB and Chrysalis Radio (CHS.L: Quote, Profile , Research).

The radio sector has struggled in recent years due to an advertising downturn and competition from the Internet and Channel 4 has said it hopes the launch of the new stations will do for radio what the launch of Freeview -- the multi-channel digital service -- has done for television.

Freeview is the most popular multi-channel TV service in Britain and its success has helped the country prepare for the switchover from analogue to digital which starts in some parts of the country later this year..

So a big development and one which will be availible here for some via Sky platform and the net (hopefully).

    Mike.
