Civil Service (Temp Contract)

Hi, I have been offered a temp (6 month) contrct with Civil Service starting next week (I assume I am covering maternity leave). Can anyone advise on the probability of this being made permanent? I have previously applied for permanent position and was told I was on panel for selection for permanent job after finishing 10th in testing but I have heard nothing since February.

    Tnx

I've worked in two departments so far, and i've never heard of any of the temps being kept on. AFAIK, it used to happen but now all permanent staff have to come through the same recruitment process.

This isn't a reflection on the quality of temps. Most of the TCOs, for example, are of a really high standard.

The most that a personnel section can do is extend the temporary contract period. And even then, not by more than a year. Nothing to stop them being re-hired as a temp again after a "break", but they cannot be given a permanent status.

Might as well take the temporary job while you're waiting though.:)

Is your department moving due to decentralisation? A lot of permanent contracts come with the proviso that you move with the decentralisation also.

I too have just started on a temp contract (1 yr) and I was told upfront its unlikely my position will be made permanent due to many reasons, including the cap on civil servants (12,000?)

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the Dept has already been decentralised so no hope there. Found out today I am covering staff who are going to work on getting a new computerised system up and running for the Dept and they are returning then so I guess it's only 6 months for sure.

While I'm on the point does anyone know how the permanent appointments process works? I completed tests in Feb and received letter in April advising I was successful as I was placed 10th and they would be in contact. Still no word. I have heard 2 years can pass before a job comes up??

if i was you i would keep ringing the Public Appointment Services, just so they don't forget you. Thats what i did, i was number one and was told the panel was closing within a month, so i rang every few days, even thought sometimes they said i wouldnt get anything, then a week later i got an offer! So you never know.
