Clubs that don't make you want to drink yourself stupid

Is it just me or does the night life in Dublin suck? No I mean REALLY suck. The culture of pack 'em in, get 'em drunk and pipe poppy sh!t through the speakers is everywhere. I seriously have to get quite drunk just to tolerate most clubs. It is a ridiculous situation. Any other country i've been to has a more mature atmosphere to clubs and a developed scene, which I can't find anywhere here. So is it really that bad or am I just completely out of the loop on what goes on in Dublin?

Ok.. so the best we've got Whelan's, Doyles (when upstairs is open), Carnival (I guess). Any other suggestions on where to go for a good night out (ie good music - subjective of course but look at the thread i'm posting on - and a good atmosphere).

    xx

I like Antics (Crawdaddy, Wed nights from 11). Good music and cheap drinks, only €3 in. Doyles is great, especially with the younger DJ - Battles and Justice were played the other week. I was so surprised to hear 'Atlas' come on there.

Never been but doesn't rogue on dame st have an indie night too?

though not specifically indie as such, i do find ri-ra can be good :) can't beat a night in doyles ever now and again, though if you go too often you just end up hearing the same stuff all the time (like most places i suppose). doyles being free in is a plus also.

Pravda can be good craic on a Saturday night too; the music can be excellent, the place is nice and the crowd is tolerable.

    But the toilets are ming.

I think it's open most nights except Sundays and possibly Mondays.. not sure about that though.

Ha.. never thought you'd hear Atlas in Doyles. That's pretty cool.. but kind of sad to think that it can make your night (happens to me a lot) if the DJ deigns to play one or two songs you like. The young lad in Doyles plays decent music but he also plays the appeal to the widest possible audience stuff as well.. the old guy is just plain terrible.

I guess I'm never gonna some find interesting, exciting music in a Dublin club. The best I can hope for is some good live music.. Occasionally some smaller venues have amazing bands playing and they're incredible nights.. The hub especially.. but that's one night every couple of weeks.

Cheers for the suggestions tho guys

Great gig on in the hub towards the end of the month, not sure i can mention it, but he'll be great!

yeh the best place for music i think is the Foggy Dew (temple bar)...but the crowds are a bit more 'mature' and less domestic (so basically middle-aged, continental europeans)

Sín é is pretty good, dunno if you would call it a club but there does be good tunes. So there does. :D

King Pr0n is a new monthly club night on in Anseo. the next one is on the 26th ...it's a fiver in and the live bands are So Cow, Stoat + the Yeh Deadlies. DIY indiepop heaven.

Antics is minging - 80,000,000 shítfaced teenagers with identikit hair/clothes spilling west coast cooler over each other to the dulcet tones of LCD Soundsystem / The Rapture [insert flavour of the month here], then staggering in to see identikit Skinny Jeans Dublin band. Avoid.

Pravda is a great spot on a Saturday, great selection of beer aswell.

Was in Pravda on Friday and the music was pretty cool, mix of toe tappin' head bangin' ass shakin' stuff, but the DJ had no bloody Stranglers  Is it always like that.

Top two I can think of for some decent tune and good people. Never actually been upstairs in Doyles for some reason but downstairs at the weekend is a laugh.Ya get the odd dodgy tune but atleast theres very little commersh.

Sin e is one of those places where you want to go to listen to music you've never heard before.all sorts of rarities, underground reggae but some good party tunes thrown in.

Ri Ra of a friday can blow hot and cold, but great when its hot!

I was just about to say this, but less damningly.

There is some good music at Antics, but the crowd is pretty ****, and the good music is interspersed with literally once-a-week plays of Strokes, Libertines, Interpol, Bloc Party, LCD.

As opposed to....? (except for the different bands of course)

Much prefer Antics to ****e like 21s or Redz, not that I've ever felt it is like what you're saying. There are a fair few scenesters, but there will be people you don't like wherever you go, it's unavoidable.

"Strokes, Libertines, Interpol, Bloc Party, LCD."

Not gonna complain for 3 out of those 5 bands. Does anyone really expect to like every song at a club?!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the mere thought of 21's and redz makes my skin crawl.
redz is the bigggest ****hole in all the land!!
    here here!

Is Whelans still closed for refurbishment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

I didn't even know Whelans was closed.

Speaking of refurbishment, TBMC is open again later this month after being closed for a while. But it says on TBMC that it will be called "Cargo". What a ****ing ridiculous name. Is this actually the case!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 64 ✭✭Phantron

    Howdy yevveh!

Yeah, it's called Cargo now. Engineer I was working with recently reckons the sound quality is going to be immense when it's opened. Here's hoping.

I've no problem with any name short of "Awful, Awful Sh*thole".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

'sup Phantron? I hope you got my text and I'll be seeing you on Saturday.

it may be a terrible name, but hey, if the sound quality is better then it's all good. Are they moving the desk out from the side of the stage, cos that's hardly a good place to judge the sound.

.. I'm still wincing over the name change. Why!? TBMC is second nature to me now :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 64 ✭✭Phantron

Not sure. Maybe it's too 'cold' a name for a venue. It does sound more like a college than a club. Also, the sound desk was up on the balcony in the dying days, was it not?

I did get your message and yep, I'll be around. I just didn't know if I could be til an hour ago. Combine that with zilch credit and you have LACK OF COMMUNICATION.

But now I am, and I do, so I will! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭yevveh

Not so much that it's cold (though I don't disagree), just I liked the previous name. It's the same with all these ****e names that mean nothing, whereas TBMC told you where and what it was. Plus it has a ring to the initials.

Was it not the right of the stage when you're facing it? Maybe that was lighting, or something. I was informed that they're moving the sound desk somewhere different than where it was before anyway!

Great - if you need the address, gimme a holla, one way or another! Jinny should be coming up too, and who knows who else!? Partaaay! :D

    Oh...

    Jinny...

    Great...

Anyway, this is going a bit off topic, so I'll bebo you or summat instead.

Just to keep on topic a bit, the Turk's Head has been found guilty of playing good music on a quite frequent basis. Always nice to hear Talking Heads in a club.
