    Hi folks,

I have recently bought a good digital camera and would like to learn to take the best photos I possibly can. This is my first digital camera but I've had a camera for years and have always been interested in photography. I may book into an evening course next winter but for now I would like to get a good book that would teach me the basics of photography. Any recommendations on where to start?

    Thanks,
    dame.

I've yet to really find a book I like.

But, I have found many websites and such

    http://www.morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php?lesson=1

Other than that - play with the camera. Come along to some of the boards gatherings. Talk to people.

I've been learning over the past year , and have found the internet a good way to learn the basics ...
for a general introduction i found this website useful

    http://web.canon.jp/imaging/enjoydslr/index.html

and there are many more advanced tutorials.

The good thing about the internet is you get choice, what suits you , may not suit someone else ... and its usually free :)

I'll second that. Should be the first read for anyone starting out and even for those longer in the tooth.

I'll third that. Also one of his other books "Learning to see creatively" is one that I've been pushing on people here for what seems like years now. Very good books for not alot of money. Some day I'll actually get around to re-reading them, when I re-find them maybe :)

Thanks guys, those websites are very good and I'll order that Understanding Exposure book today. I was afraid there'd be recommendations for ten different books and I'd be no nearer knowing what to go for, so thanks again!

It's well worth getting both books ("Learning to see creatively") as well. When I got them Amazon were doing a special deal if you bought both together. So you see, Rymus, we do listen to you now and again!

Thanks a million for this Paul, it looks really good. It's great that it has assignments to put everything into practice. Looking forward to my new camera being delivered, hurry up pixmania!! :D

A fourth vote for understanding exposure. I got this recently from past posts from Danny etc and I found it brilliant. I need to read it again and again though.
