Catherine Tate has been confirmed as David Tennant's new companion in the next series of Doctor Who.

Not convinced this is a good choice. Her character Donna really annoyed me in the Christmas special but Catherine Tate really seems up for the role.

I think that her character in The Runaway Bride will probably be tempered a little and the character matured - even towards the end she was beginning to show signs of promise.

The fact that she'll a) stand up to the Doctor b) seems to understand the Doctors psychology quite well c) not make puppy dog eyes at him for the entire season and d) possibly push Martha out the door when she comes back might make it interesting.

    /me slaps Russell T Davies

Her character was a head-wreck in runaway bride. :(

God almighty. Notwithstanding the fact that I hate Catherine Tate I also found Donna to be bearable for one episode. People may forget that her character is one of a dumb chav who somehow missed the Cyberman/Daley invasion and also the spaceship crashing into Big Ben. A fine companion indeed.

RTD got her because of the novelty. Who's going to be the next Doctor? At this rate my money is on Ricky Gervais. No doubts about it, after the rubbish of LOTTL and this, and not even mentioning Kylie this Christmas, RTD is a twat and his own statement back in 2004 that he is making the Who he wants, not what anyone else wants, is becoming more and more true.

Hopefully next year is the last of him.

Please tell me this is a joke? Do we need another chav companion? Hell what about exploring a companion who is, ya know, male?

Seriously, Tate was okay in the Xmas special but I had no wish to see her join full time. No doubt RTD thinks this is FANTASTIC but casting this comedian makes the show an ever bigger joke. GAH!

    Argh... Holy f*ck!

I can't stand her stupid shouty voice and stupid ugly face with that big ugly lump on it.

I think I'm done... I can't see myself tuning in each week to look at that monstrosity.

Why, oh f*cking why didn't they get Sally Sparrow and her boyfriend back?

    From the Register:
Russell T Davies kicked off the now-traditional Who cast announcement love-in with: "Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series. Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

    Ugh.

It's his last season on the show. I'm thinking "scorched earth".

Bravo RTD he's managed to make the casting of Bonnie Langford seem like a sage intelligent move.

I'd rather see frogface from Torchwood as the companion than Catherine ****ing Tate. Donna was a terrible character and I don't think I saw one single positive comment about her anywhere.
Why, oh f*cking why didn't they get Sally Sparrow and her boyfriend back?

I was convinced they decided to get rid of Martha because Sally was such a great character and would be brought in as the new companion.

I'm still holding out hope that this is a joke. :(

And going on what they said yesterday:

"The new announcement leaves a vacant space in the TARDIS. A new companion for The Doctor, who will join the new series for the entire 13 week run, will be announced shortly."

13 f*cking weeks of vile shouty Tate.... unwatchable....

I never liked her to begin with, but was willing to giver her a chance with the Xmas special... but I still think it's the worst episode they've done... The TARDIS car chase was the only good thing in it.

I wanna cry. Maybe if we get enough signatures saying we hate Tate, and send it into the Beeb, they'll make Russell choose someone else, ie. Sparrow.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I like the new Who, that will absolutley Fcukin ruin it, I wasnt too keen onthe concept of Kylie in the Crimbo special, but I was willin to let it slide as it couldnt poswibly be any worse than tate.

my vote is for eithe Sally sparrow, orhe could nip back to pre revolutionary France and pick up Madame de Pompaduie before she dies, christ he could take one of those annoying cat creatures from New New York, twould still be less iritating than Tate

Judging by forums elsewhere, that's everyone's vote. Instead though he's gone for the one that people want the least.

No doubt though he's convinced it's an extremely popular choice and in no way was brought about by the fact that Catherine Tate has a contract with the BBC and needs to be put to work...

Oh and RTD leaving? Not anytime soon according to an interview I read :(

All very reminiscent of the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BILLIE PIPER OMGZ" hype before she started. I suspect people will still watch it though..

No, it's different because, unlike with Billie, we know what CT is like in Doctor Who and what her character is like. That's why it's bad.

Actually, I watched the Christmas Special recently, after the announcement of her appointment and I thought that she wasn't that bad. Leaving out all the screaming at the start she is actually quite a good character.

As for Sally Sparrow I heard that they are in development hell for yet another spin off.

Oh, and as for RTD......... have a look at the Confidential Cut Down shows on BBC3 this week, they're from the Chris Ecclestone Series. My, Russ, haven't you grown!!! He'd be nuts to leave a gravy train such as the one he has.

we know what CT is like in Doctor Who and what her character is like

Well we've only seen her once, and she was designed to be quite annoying to begin with..like popebenny16, I watched the repeat and towards the end she wasn't near as bad. She'd matured quite considerably. She's also had a year to change so I suspect the Donna we see next time out won't be quite the same person we saw at the start of the Christmas special.

Okay, but is it a great move to have a companion who was designed to be annoying? Yes she calmed down at the end, but she was only more likable relative to her original self.
I can just see her character engaging in histronics whenever something goes awry or yelling belligerently at the Doctor in her loud, grating voice. If she, additionally, ends up fancying the Doctor I will partake in a Vengeance Quest against the Fat Controller of DW...
