I saw Persona by Ingmar Bergman a few nights ago on Film4 and thought it was fantastic. Really liked the feel of it.

I'd like to see a few more of his films, looking for one or two recommendations? He seems fairly prolific.

If you've not seen it, then by all means check out The Seventh Seal. I haven't seen as much of Bergman's films as I'd like, but I've also enjoyed Hour Of The Wolf and Scenes From A Marraige, so I'd recommend those.

Bergman is one of my favorite directors. Of his films I recommend:

    Fanny and Alexander
    Wild Strawberries
    The Seventh Seal
    Scenes From a Marriage
    Persona
    Cries and Whispers
Hour of the Wolf (much underrated!)
    Winter Light
    Saraband
and, finally, one of my faves: Smiles of a Summer Night (one of his earlier films).

Pretty much all of Bergman's films are thought provoking, so I wouldn't confine myself to only those I have listed. They just happen to be my faves.
If you liked the feel of 'Persona', then there's a good chance you'll enjoy at least some of the films I've listed above.

Incidentally, I see there's another thread going about 'Mulholland Drive' by David Lynch. That film contains a very obvious homage to 'Persona'.

Yes, definitely check this one out. It's a very good film and, happily, the Filmhouse cinema here in Edinburgh will be showing it later this month. So I might just take this chance to watch it on the big screen. :)

I recommend painting one wall "50's institutional gunmetal grey" and staring at it on a hard wooden chair for about 10 hours.

So basically all of them Master Shake;) :) Basically the first port of call has to be the seventh seal. A truly incredible film. Watch it, miss the point, watch it again and love it(at least thats the way it happened with me:o ). Its now one of my favourite films ever.

Aside from that I really liked the magician and Hour of the wolf. Wild strawberries is also very very highly rated. I must admit I was underwhelmed by it but I have a feeling it is a film that will benefit from a repeated viewing so I intend to watch it again.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm going to watch Seventh Seal next I think.

BBC FOUR are having an Ingmar Bergman weekend right now: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/ "Journey into Autumn" is on now. There's interviews and documentaries on him coming up tonight and tomorrow too.

Yeh I watched Mulholland Drive about a week before I saw Persona and spotted that too. Good homage / reference.

Just watched Journey into Autumn AKA Glamour. It was the last pre-classic era Bergman or minor-Ingmar if you prefer but none-the-less contains most of the central themes of his canon. Lovely luminescent B&W photography and plenty of well observed scenes in a brief 80 min film.

    Mike.
