Canon 17-85 lens

Bought a canon 17-85 IS lens over the weekend for the canon 400d as I thought the kit lens was not great.
I am new to photography but I see in these threads that people use filters to protect their lenses. Is the sole purpose of a filter to protect the lens?
I was wondering could someone recommend a good filter for the 17-85?
Also what is the difference between a UV filter and a clear filter (which is better at protecting the lens etc.)?

Well filters do much more than protect the lens. They modify the light passing though them. Polarizers for example remove all but one plane of light form the scene (circular polarizers are a bit different) allowing you to do cool things like eliminate reflections from glass and water.

Most colour filters are not really useful on digital cameras as it can be done afterwards easily in RAW.

I'm not totally fimilar with filters and I'm sure someone will come along and explain much better thn me.

A UV filter is the best as it helps cut down haze and protect the front lens elements from scratching and fingerprints. They're around €30,

I too own a 17-85 and wanted to get a nice filter to help protect the lens as well as get the other added benefits of using a filter.

Here is the one I got from Kea. Arrived in around 10 days for 27 Eur all in. No tax or duty on this needs to be paid. It only arrived today so cannot comment on how good it is, but as it screws into the end of the lens and is adjustable it should be just great.

Here is some more info on polarising filters, posted by somone else here on another thread. Worth a read.
