Cooling hard drives

My hard drives (2x IDE + 1 SATA) have been acting up a lot recently. At least I'm assuming it's them based on what's been happening. The SATA disk, which was installed when I bought the PC, is housed up against the front of the case. One of the IDE disks is screwed into a bay beneath the DVD/DVD-RW drives and the third one is just hanging loose by the IDE connector, probably a little too close to the SATA disk for comfort, but I've not got a whole lot of choice.

I think they're overheating and am wondering what would be the best way to reduce this and the associated problems. I don't see where or how I can attach a second fan (how do people normally do this?) so maybe I need to insulate them somehow so the heat from one doesn't affect another one.

Anyone got any ingenious tips? I could, I suppose, forego the DVD/combo drive and house the hanging IDE HD up there in its bay away from everything else...

You could take out the hanging IDE hdd and put it in an external enclosure. What type of case do you have? this will help answer your question about the fans.

can you post a pic of the inside of the case?

Perhaps a fan for a 3.5" bay would be suitable for your situation. Here's one Maplin sell.

if a drive is right up against the front of the case maybe move back a smidgen / drill holes in the case so there is air flow past it.

or get some sheet copper and make a new HDD bracket

I like the look of that fan - unfortunately I have no space there. No floppy drive and a set of card readers below the DVD-RW drive.

Right at the moment I'm running just two programs, a browser and a downloader writing to the loose-hanging IDE drive and my system is slowing down every ten seconds or so. Does this sound like it's overheating or simply on its last legs?

I turned off all programs accessing that drive and it's back to normal. I'm going to try moving it to the combo-drive bay for a few days and if it still acts the mickey I'll have to buy a new one. Just saw a 500GB IDE drive for 90 euros, so might be a good chance to upgrade.

Looks like both IDE hard drives are buggered - millions of bad sectors and impossible to unmount. Yayy! :(
