Pac Man - Mame Compo Round 2

    Compo for the next two weeks is Pac Man.

    * Use any version of Mame (current is u.116xx)
    * Use Pac-man (Midway) version - filename pacman

    * Starts Saturday 30th of June and ends on Sunday 15th July
    * The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible.
    * Post screenshots (not too big, suggest 320x200).
    * Scores will be tracked here.
    * Don't cheat - what's the point anyway!

    Pac-Man (c) 1980 Namco.

    The seminal and hugely influential arcade game in which the player guides the legendary Pac-Man around a single-screen maze eating dots. Pac-Man is constantly pursued in his task by four ghosts - Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (blue) and Clyde (orange). Each ghost has its own unique personality and behavioral patterns and a single touch from any of the ghosts results in Pac-Man losing a life.

    Four 'Power Pills' are situated in each corner of the rectangular mazes and eating one of these makes Pac-Man temporarily invincible; the four ghosts also change to dark blue in color and can now be eaten by Pac-Man. These 'Skinned' ghosts, now visible as a pair of eyes only, will then return to the den in the middle of the maze, regenerate into their former selves, and return to the maze to continue their pursuit of Pac-Man.

    Each maze contains 240 dots and 4 Power Pills, and all must be eaten to complete the level; whereupon the entire sequence begins again with an increased level of difficulty. Between every two, three, or four completed levels, animated intermissions, or 'cut scenes', are played. These intermissions are not seen after the 18th board (6th key) has been reached, however.

    Occasionally, a bonus fruit or prize item will temporarily appear in the middle of the maze below the ghosts' den. Pac-Man can eat these bonus items to receive extra points. Also, there is an escape tunnel on the left and right hand side of the maze that Pac-Man can use to escape any ghosts that are currently closing in on him. The ghosts can also use the tunnel, but take longer to pass through it than Pac-Man, making escape a little easier.

    - SCORING -
    Dot : 10 points
    Power pill (energizer) : 50 points
    Ghosts : 200, 400, 800, 1600 points
    Cherry : 100 points.
    Strawberry : 300 points.
    Peach : 500 points.
    Apple : 700 points.
    Pineapple : 1000 points.
    Galaxian : 2000 points.
    Bell : 3000 points.
    Key : 5000 points.

    Wow

    In fairness being 22 i never got to play the original...the only one ive played up till now was the one built into some PHP websites :p

    But thats slow...and well...not boring..but slow compared to this :p

    Man those ghosts get quick...real quick...and their changing from blue to normal isnt much later on..like 1 second or something :o

    That was after 3 tries, but tbh, i dont know if i can do much better if i did a few hours...will try again tomorrow anyways :p

    Reached screen 5 - best I can currently manage is 30,490 (updated shot on post #2 above). Yep, the ghosts certainly get fast after screen 4 and the power pills ain't that helpful by then. Although it can be easy to fool 'em by taking an off the beat path - but it's so risky.

    Years ago I had Jelly Monsters on the Vic20 and it was amazing - I thought the graphics were on par with the arcade and I got so far in that one - I mean after awhile the same fruit would appear screen after screen (I don't know maybe it was screen 8+).

    Best I can manage here is reaching the apple. Definitely worth trying to bunch up the monsters to get a high score but I lost so many lives trying to do that.

    I had a real disheartening pathetic effort with Mayhem in Monsterland earlier on in C64 compo... just didn't click so when I played another 2 games of Pacman just now - I managed to increase my old high score of 30K to 44,960 pts to screen 7 with close to no effort. Screenshot updated above in post #2. The monsters sure go fast by that stage. But, you know, the monsters seem to display this knack of going down the same routes and the odd reverse turns that you start to guess.... it's fun at that stage! Just to reach the powerups! :D

    What is nice about that game for the compo - is that it's short and sweet.

    The green fruit I think is Pineapple. Worth 1,000 pts.

    I tried pacman 6 times today but didn't get near my 44,940 pts high...

    1st attempt 22,040 pts
    2nd attempt 28,810 pts (my best run today)
    3rd attempt 23,300 pts
    4th attempt 11,080 pts
    5th attempt 2,020 pts (my shortest game ever!)
    6th attempt 21,900 pts.....

    :(

    Can only manage 26160 so far but I'll keep trying and I'll post whatever I end up with at the end of the 2 weeks.

    1. 15,200 pts level 3 (always lost 1 life on lv1 here today)
    2. 18,850 pts level 3
    3. 30,430 pts level 5
    4. 44,590 pts level 7 (best today... only 370 ps off my high. Grr!)
    5. 23,450 pts level 5

    Today's effort.. no nearer my 44,960 best.

    1. 30,030 pts (level 5)
    2. 22,010 pts (level 4)
    3. 31,530 pts (level 5) 10,700 pts by end of 1st level
    4. 26,500 pts (level 5)
    5. 36,150 pts (level 6)... really starting to predict these guys now.

    I'm starting to find you can "dummy" direct these guys down the wrong route, ie arrive late as possible to where you want to go. If you got space behind you, try start going a different route but immediately go back the route you were heading... works a treat many times! :)

    Slow start but finished on a good game on attempt 5 but still not good enough to set a new score.

    I guess you guys are tiring of pacman huh? Next game starts next Saturday (Ghouls N' Ghosts) so ye should enjoy that! :)

    Man, I suck balls at this game!! Gave it an ol' whirl there at lunch and before I knew it I started to panic everytime the feckers started flanking me. :o

    Try "dummy" directing those guys down the wrong route, ie arrive late as possible to where you want to go. This actually affects the route they take. If you got space behind you, try start going a different route but immediately go back the route you were heading. Even split second delays make a big difference to their movements.

    Well, I can't seem to last past the 6th or 7th screen. It's a real wall with me. 4K off my high. Feels easier now to fool those monsters but when it doesn't work... those lives sure go down hill fast.
