Idea - processing challenge

I have an idea. Maybe better in Digital Darkroom, but I'll post here and let the mods decide ...

Would anyone be up for a post-processing challenge ?

I (or someone else here) will post an un-processed high-res photo into a flickr group, whoever is interested joins the group and downloads that original shot and post-processes it in any way they like using whatever software they like and without a brief or any rules. When done, we then post our new version of the image back to the group before a deadline. All the posters then vote (by commenting) on their favourite - obviously they can't vote for their own.

A bit of fun, but will be very interesting to see what comes out of it - the different styles used, the approach taken by different people.

Anyone else think this is a fantastic idea, and would you be up for it ?

Anyone intersted, please post your Flickr ID. I will add you as a contact, and when you add me (unfortunately thats the only way we can do this) I will invite you to the private group. The photo will be chosen later when we're all setup and everyone interested is in.

Why use flickr, as opposed to just posting it here? It kind of leaves those of us who loathe flickr out in the cold.

    Just use email?

Well, if someone wouldn't mind doing a bit of hosting, we could well put up the RAW file on an ftp for people to download, giving people a chance to work on it from scratch?

It might sound obnoxious, but keep the group as invite only, so we can share the ftp between us, and if someone else wants to join, let them pm/mail away.

If you can explain how I can set up an ftp I'll gladly host it.

ok point taken on the use/non-use of flickr. all this adding contacts and inviting to the group was doing my head in anyway ;)

The nice thing about flickr is it does all the hard lifting for you. I have ftp and web hosting, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to do it. Ftp'ing a file means only that - someone would have to build a gallery from the folder contents and attribute names to each image etc. Let me think about it, and if anyone else has any ideas do speak up.

Email the raw out to whomever wants to try and then they post it up when they process it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

RAW's might be a bit too big for that - I tried to send some of mine to Rymus the other day, took nearly an hour, so resorted to ftp, that's where I got the idea!!

What I was thinking with the RAW was that, the person who took the photograph uploads it to the ftp, the people that are interested are given the username and password to d/l the RAW, process it, host it wherever they want, and we could start a new thread in the Photo Challenge every month, relatively similar to what happens at the moment, except relating to 133t photoshoping skillz. :)

I'm interested in joining in, will be great to see the various approaches.

Sounds like its not going to be flickr based but here's my id anyway

if any hosting is needed, I can provide an ftp account & subdomain to facilitate the downloading and storage of raw files of any size.

Oh yeah, add me too :D Flickr id is rymus

sure why not, i'm in, flickr is http://www.flickr.com/photos/muineach/ with of course the user name being muineach

Thanks for the offer of help. Would you mind setting the ftp/hosting up ? Whats the best way to proceed - create a new thread here or in the Digital Darkroom to kick this off ?

Also - would someone more technically proficient than I like to suggest an image to start off with ?

I don't mean to ditch this having suggested it, but with a lot going on in the next three weeks (including getting married) I'm going to have limited time to contribute to this, though I would like to take part if I can find some time.

Thanks all for the interest. If half the people participate, it'll be very interesting stuff indeed.

    http://process.rymus.net

Suppose the best thing to do is for the person who's going to start the first challenge (that'd be you I'm guessing m_stan) to open a thread in photo challenge, upload either (or preferably both) a RAW and Jpeg of the master file and link to the files for download in the thread.

For displaying entries, I suppose the easiest thing to do is create a new album in the existing photo challenge gallery for people to upload their finished jpeg's to...

Yep, I think the Photo Challenge forum is the way to go with this.

    This should be good!

Wouldn't that be a nice one, considering the wedding and everything...?

    Or, this one: http://flickr.com/photos/ragorder/497875700/ maybe?

Great idea !!! Its a nice subject and could do with some processing, so this would be a good place to start. However, I don't have a RAW of these. I do have the original jpeg (2938 x 2201) which should be ok to work from.

Can a few of you confirm we can work with the high res jpeg, and I'll post a new thread and link you all to it.

    Thanks !
