Theres always an element of sensationalism when it comes to eating the food in Thailand, but as far as i see it, the same rules apply as anywhere else in the world. Eat in a place thats got a good reputation, looks clean, got lots of people (although thats not 100% best way to decide) etc...

Having said that, i ate plenty stuff from street vendors on the border of Burma and Thailand and it was lovely, with no ill effects! You could just as easily get a dose from the hot dogs they sell on Westmoreland Street i imagine...

Dont worry about it too much, people lose track of whats important when they are away on holidays and worry too much about stuff and stifle their time away, Thailands a great place, enjoy it, but stay away from the whiskey with Salamanders in the bottom of the bottle...

    food in thailand is fine.

golden rule: use you're intuition to decide whether somewhere looks clean and the people look hygienic.

    enjoy.

Any food cooked fresh in front of you is going to be fine. Be careful with the water though, use bottled water to brush your teeth but you should be fine! Don't bother bringing a whole chemist worth of drugs though, they have Boots!

everything cooked is fine- even street vendors- yum!!!
what gives you the squirts is usually fresh salad and fruit washed in tap water

Most food is fine, but you need to be careful with the water as another poster said, and with the ice too. Chicken on a stick at 6 in the morning is to die for by the way!

Head is right, there is lots of sensationalism about eating in Thailand... and other parts of SE Asia. I never had a bad meal anywhere in Thailand. Just use your common sense about a place.
But then again, I could never could work up the courage to eat from street vendors.

 Oh no, i thought i had wiped all trace of evil buckets from my memory... Not to mention the bum guns, which are better discovered for oneself rather than here. Wouldnt want to ruin the surprise :p.

Is avoiding ice difficult over there? If you're getting a drink is it common for ice to be used meaning you always have to request for no ice? Or is it just a matter of never asking for ice and you'll be grand?

Heading over in 3 weeks myself!

Ha, I say your friends just blamed the food but i bet it was those evil buckets.

Feckin whiskey buckets. I had one in the Shamrock bar on the Khao San road in Bangkok, with 4 mates who each ordered one too, at 12.45, and at 01.00, we were kicked out, so we'd 2 options, sink the bucket, or leave it there. We chose the idiotic route, and I remember everything until about 2am.

Next morning, I woke up with a monster tattoo (Although, it is fairly cool) on my left lower leg, all the skin missing from my knee, and half a tooth missing in the back of my mouth. Apparently, I repaired some guys TucTuc at 4 in the morning, push started it, and when it got running, I fell over, cut my knee, and hit my jaw on the ground, which broke the tooth. Go fig.
