Hello all. My sister is in San Francisco at the mo.. and unfortunately she is finding it very difficult to secure a job. She has been there about three weeks and has not received her social security no. There seems to be some delay, and she cannot be paid until it’s sorted out. Work seems to be thin on the ground so I was hoping someone here may have some advice I could pass on to her. Anything you can think of would be appreciated.

Edit: She is 21 and good looking. She studies Ceramics and has lots of Bar experience.

answers to the following may be help in getting you to the point

But what sector she is looking job in ?
    whats her qualifications ?
    Any previous experience ?
Has she been denied jobs ? if so on what grounds ?
    Whats her visa status ?

She is looking for work in the city centre. Her Visa is the J1 I think.. she is eligible to work anyway. She is having problems with unforeseen delays with her social security no, I believe this has happened to others. She doesn’t have any qualifications but she has good references from previous part time jobs in Ireland. I think employers have told her there is nothing at the mo, and one or two have told her she has to sort out the no before they can pay her. She is looking for anything half decent really, she has got some poxy door to door pyramid nonsense but its commission based. I did something similar in Australia and it’s very very crap + she is calling in sick to find something else.

The city centre is going to be hit with a load of J1'ers so its hard to find work.

There are tons of malls in the burbs that may be worth looking at if she fancies a go at retail

Stonestown is on a MUNI metro line

Tanforan in San Bruno on the BART

Hillsdale has on the Caltrain and a jobs site http://www.hillsdale.com/job%20opportunities.html

Not so familiar with the east bay but Walnut Creek has a compact town centre served by BART that may be worth hitting for the day.

Get her to check out the local GAA club. Someone there always has a handy little number to sort out the irish folks

Has she gone down to the SS office to ask for the number or written confirmation she has applied for it? The card can take ages, I went down and they wrote a letter for me with the number on it saying it was assigned and the card was on the way.

On the CV's, does she mention that she has bar experience, is a woman, and is Irish? Also, a reference with a phone number will go down a treat, but mention that the clocks are about 8 hours ahead over here, in case they try to ring at 4pm...

No offence, but if your mates think she's hot, get her to put a photocopy of her passport photo on the CV's, if not, don't.

not to be blunt but if she is good looking, horrible i know, Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle take on girls all summer. the guys are told to offer good looking girls jobs and flirt with them etc.

A&F holdgroup interviews every week or so. well they did when i was there (stock room - so not as high standards to get in!!!)

they are in the San Fran Centre on Market and 5th.

The manager in Brookstone is very nice and also Diesel have hired irish employees before. they all require a SS# to start, most jobs require one to even apply.

Thanks everyone.. especially ellscurr. She went down to the office and it turned out there was a screw up with her application.. says she caused a fuss until a supervisor came over and helped her out. She got the number and got a job in the Hard rock cafe. She asked me to thank all of you for the help.

I went to a temping agency a few days after arriving in SanFran (2000), a few days later I was doing admin stuff for Bank of America in Concorde (a 25min trip on the BART Line). I suck at typing and office work, so the standard must be low. Tell her to try that if she tires of waiting on tables.

It's a great city, I'm sure she'll have a lot of fun there.

No sweat - I only know from my own 'colourful' experiences in America how to get these things done lol
