    Watch http://flightaware.com/live/airport/EINN

You can tell if its coming accross the pond- it either uses the flight designator VDA (volga dnepr) or ADB (antonov design buraeu). The type would be A124. Then for the AN224 (its big brother) it would be A224.

Try and watch them lumber into the sky, it is a magnificent sight to behold :)
When you see them beside other aircraft it really drives home their size.

I am not allowed discuss …

Used to be, however Volga Dnepr moved their hub to Leipzig I believe. Due to them operating UN flights out out Leipzig, and wanted to have their maint. base there too.....

They kept on some of the staff at Shannon to handle the odd AN124 transit

I was in one, the time they flew the railway locomotive in from Canada. Hard to believe it could fly, truely massive.

That 124 flies regularly in & out of RAF Brize Norton. Great fun to sit on the path at the end of the runway & see if you can hang on to the fence !. It has to gradually run up it's engines to full power over about 2 mins. A friend of mine who lives near Brize has a video of some Italian spotters plus chairs being blown across the road & into the ditch.

The central section of that picket fence has been renewed several times !. My friend was there when a VC10 caught the fence. It was deliberately made to break away. That video was taken off the centre line - it's even better when you are in the middle especially for take offs.

I once spoke to an old guy who was there when the B36's were around. He was telling us how they had to remove the fence for take-offs.

The other thing that's great to watch at Brize is the RAF lads practising their tactical descents in the Globemaster. Amazing to see such a big plane dropping at a very high rate, hitting the runway with no approach & coming to a quick stop.
