Well i've just bought a 05 corsa desgin as my first car. Runs well but i have just had a major problem with the head lights. When i try to put on dipped of full beam it puts the indicators on fully. The only source of light i have are side lights. The indicators only work normally when the headlights are not turned on, otherwise they side light blinks when its on with the indicator.

Its still under warrently and bringing it to the network q garage on monday, but does anyone have any idea whats wrong? I've checked the fuses and they are all fine.

    Cheers

Is the stalk a "combi" type with lights and indicators together? If so you have faulty wiring contacts by the sound of it.

Afaik the 05 corsa has a separate knob for the headlights to the right of the steering wheel, plus the usual indicator stalk.

Slightly OT: During the week I was stuck in bad traffic behind a Renault scenic which was indicating to turn right. All of their brake lights (including the LED stip on the back window) were flashing in opposite rhythm to the indicator, and their left reversing light was flashing in sync with the indicator. I was behind it for a good ten mins and it was driving me mad.

Whoops I dunno what I was thinking! I should have said the stalk will proberly also feature the main beam push/pull switch, so thats proberly the problem. A short maybe.

It could be that the headlight bulbs are blown an the indicators are lighting up instead as a safety feature. I've never heard about this on an Opel, but I have seen it on Mercedes and other brands. Can you get the high beam to work?

I've seen this a fair bit recently on a lot of different makes and models. Not somethign I'd noticed before which is strange. I know when my missus got her scenic (its a 00 bought early last year) we noticed an issue after a few weeks. A bit of dgging around and i copped the wires on the harness going to the bulb holder were pulled and strained. Looked like the previous owner tried the yank the cables methond of getting the bulb holder out when changing a bulb, the tools. There was the remnance of a shattered bulb in the light enclosure 2 so I assume the catch gave way after a good bit of tugging.

What goe sthrough peoples head in these situations , surely cop on tells you yanking cables isnt going to be the manufacturers preferred way of changing bulbs? Manuals are provided for stupide people liek that but I suppose some just dont have a clue. Anyhoo. I got a new bulb holders and block connectors off a scrappie on ebay and repaired it myself, all has been fine since.

Whew, and I thought it was just my 95 Corolla being weird!

    - Whenever I press the brakes my sidelights come on. This started happening after I replaced a rear lighting cluster that had been kicked in. Maybe the wiring in it is somehow dodgy?
    - My headlights have a habit of randomly coming on and off by themselves. Very annoying, as it causes my battery to discharge overnight unless I disconnect the battery. Also must cause huge annoyance to other drivers :( I heard a clicking as they came on and off when the bonnet lid was open so maybe its a faulty relay?

Remove the tail/brake light bulbs , then go in and press the brake - if the fault is gone it was internal fault in the bulb (seen it before) .

If the fault is still there unplug the light clusters , if teh fault is still there its wiring (maybe melted a bit?) or further up.

..........its sounds to me like you have the wrong bulbs installed. I have seen this many times !

Unplug the new cluster you had to put in.
If that sorts it and it has a combined brake/tailight , take out the brake light bulb and make sure its the proper one . If it is the proper bulb , something is up with the cluster , go dig into it

It'd be unlikely its a faulty relay since you heard it clicking it was being energised by something. That something may be a faulty stalk switch or chafed wiring or something even more fun to find.
Open the bonnet and get someone to turn on & off the lights so you can identify which relay it is.At least then you can pull it ( make sure EVERYTHING still works after) until you get it sorted.

Ok so i take the Brake light bulbs these are a combined Bulb for back lights and brake lights. If this stops the issue of the dims coming on when i press the pedal and the brake light on the window coming on when i switch the lights on then its the bulbs that are fault. If not then check the clusters one by one to see if it is a faulty cluster

Again thanks a million for the advice

A common fault is the plug that connects to the cluster (bulb holder) can be corroded. Sometimes it is enough to simply clean the connections.

Hi just had a quick look at it and as you said it may be a faulty bulb as i turned the bulb around so now i have one brake light and both back lights can turn all lights on and functions ok now bar one break light

The old Escorts were terrible for corrosion in the rear light cluster, many a time I've saw Mk 3 lights doing a disco-floor impression as the indicators were used.
