How the hell do they fit a gerbil and a wheel into that laptop? It's amazing what they can do with technology these days.

    Ram rulez!

I'm surprised there wasn't at least 4GB in it already. Was it only 2GB?

    Good work guys.

I'm seeing a tangible increase in speed here (pages loading quicker and not hanging for a split second, or more-that kind of thing).

    I'd better go too...

They escaped. They used the wrong sized holes in the cage to keep them in.

Also, attachments moved to disk now - much more DB friendly

Dheara, as you know Mike, I hate to see the place go down as much as anybody, but this was not an upgrade as such from what I gather. I believe the collective attachments were moved somewhere else to streamline things.

Once people know what's going on (as in the message on the homepage earlier), they don't seem to mind as much.

It's the unexplained outages that seem to frustrate people and give rise to the "Oh Bugger, it's down again" mindset.

I realise that a message on the homepage in some form is not always possible, but I think where it is, it should be utilised to keep people in the loop.

Just my 2% of a Euro...

I fully agree with you actually.

Trouble is that the 'boards is down, and here's why' message is powered from the database, which has been causing problems of late.

I've put about 10-12 hours of my own spare time this week to ease the load on the database, and we've spent money to buy more RAM to help it through the really busy times. I think this will help and there's still plenty of other things for us to do, much of which will mean little interruptions to service, but hopefully ending up in a longer subsequent stable period.

Having said that, the little messages like 'is that it?' and 'oh god, down again' make it all so worth the effort.

It's a bit catch 22 alright, especially given that fixing a problem is a greater priority than putting up a message or redirect or summat that said problem has deemed necessary in the first place :D

    I can imagine.

However, coming on here and letting people know, as well as having the homepage message in the first instance should nip that in the bud, this time at least.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Dan. I'm sure I'm not the only one to see a tangible improvement in the last day or two.

Fair play to ya Dan, your efforts are very much appreciated. Anyone can give money to a cause but to give time is a much more valuable contribution.

    Is it in yet ;)

boards has been very nippy recently, so kudos to the admins.

With the amount of visitors this site is pulling in, I'd imagine VB is more of limitation at this stage.

The nightly backup seems faster now too... back at ~3:30?! shocking stuff... wouldn't have expected it back until 3:40 at least.

A thinkpad can do anything, I'm running the internet off one now and look how fast it is.

I really am shocked at the performance boost that moving the attachments and plugging in a little RAM can do.

    /me makes note

Kudos on the hard work reginald. I know I wouldn't have liked spending my Friday slaving over a hot server.

We changed a few more things than that, but these were the easier ones to explain. If anyone's curious, I'm sure we could explain in more detail what we did.

    Did you recalibrate teh manifold?
Reverse polarity on the inductor array?
    Initiate an inverse tachyon field?
    Modulate a frequency resonance cascade?

No, silly, he twiddled the flux capacitor.
