    Hey all,

I just have a question regarding setting up my own small business for summer. because im an artist and doin a art related course, i was thinkin of stickin up flyers around my town offering to do murals or paintings on walls(like a disney painting on the wall of a creche), or something along the lines of that.

Does anybody know if thats alowed or do i have to register or something?
After all it will only be a summer thing until i go back to college....

    Thanks in advance,

    Duffman

AFAIK, that's littering (in legal terms anyway). You could try asking local shops if they'd put your fliers on their counter.

    Hey Pythia,

I was gona place them on shop notice boards, windows, etc. anyways. But it was more on the tax/licence side of things of me going out and getting my own work from people, thats what i was worried about.

I was thinking I am a student and in previous jobs i was exempt from paying tax, so the tax side of things is okay.

Aren't artists tax-exempt to begin with? I only know that because Irish comedians always brag about it.

Hmm, this post wasn't all that helpful, was it?

I think you have to earn over €100,000pa as an artist to qualify for exemption. Is that right?

To the OP, as long as you don't earn too much money (ie. in the thousands) you won't have to pay any tax anyway because your credits will cover it - presuming you haven't worked yet this year.

Okay OP, Painting on people's internal walls is most certainly not littering and other than registering with the Revenue there is no licences required.

Anyway, 99.99% of people in your position will work for the summer pocket the few bob and never declare anything to the tax man. But, if you are more conscientous than the majority of people you should register yourself as self-employed with the revenue and in due course they will send you the tax return forms, etc. This way is by far the simplest of the fully legal ways to carry on your business. Or alternatively, you could register a limited company but this would entail unduly burdensome duties and responsibilities and indeed be very expensive.

Pretty much. Unless you're earning a substantial amount of cash the tax man doesn't really care. If it's only one or two thousand over the summer then it's not going to be a problem.
