Driving Range club damage

Question arose after a 6 iron shot on the 18th fairway. Ball went about 15 yards, club head went about 45 yards. I was left with a lightweight graphite shaft with a splintered end in my hands.

Can practicing at a driving range with astro turf mats damage your clubs???

if your coming steep into the ball on mats, your exerting alot of pressure on your clubs shaft. Clubs go through turf alot easier then astro mats. So yeah. I've witnessed 5 players snap 5 irons hitting off mats on my course during winter play. Though golf club insurance covers this, driving range, its at your own risk.

I wish I knew beforehand! Oh well!:( Next time I'll only hit the balls off the tee and not the mat!

Incidentally, would graphite shafts be more susceptible to this kind of damage than steel shafts?
