    What do people use here?

Looking to get something easy to use to mess about with photos can create the odd banner or two for different web sites I'm on?

Gimp 2 is quite elaborate function wise and you should be able to find most of your desired manipulations available there (some say it is the Open Source version of Photoshop - eventhough I think it is good for being cheap I am not one of them)

There is Photo Shop Pro which is alright also. There is Macromedia Fireworks which is quite neat for website related content like banners and the likes.

But by far my favorite is Photoshop which regrettably also requires a deep dig into your pocket if you want to buy it ...

I use Photoshop Elements. It has all the important features of Photoshop but as less cost. Plus some very good books published... I use Scott Kelby's book all the time as a quick reference guide.

I use Photoshop but if you want something free and something you can use then The Gimp would be fine or Paint.net.

I see Gimp is free. Is elements expensive and worht getting over Gimp?

Elements is costs about 60€ iirc and it more powerfull then the free gimp. But if you dont know what your doing there is no point wasting money on elements as you will only be starting out with basic things.

I use the Gimp, and I'm quite happy with it indeed.

Paint.NET, a happy median between Paint and Photoshop, so easy to pick up!

Iirc it's General Image Manipulation Program! :p

The Gimp can be as good as photoshop, you just have to learn how to use it, like photoshop.

I use Photoshop CS2, and am upgrading to CS3 within a few weeks because I spend most of my time on it, but if all you want to do is mess around and make banners, go for the Gimp... Even Google's Picassa should handle some photo messing around for you!

I use paint.net for simple/quick stuff, and the gimp for more complicated things. I'm fairly rubbish with both, so I try to get the photo as good as possible from the camera! :)

GNU Image Manipulation Program. ;) Also Paint.net is great if it's just for simpler things.
