The Financial Regulaor has a useful survey, available from www.itsyourmoney.ie which gives a pretty good overview of Stockbrokers fees.
There are UK sites like Hoodless Brennan and The Motley Fool which also offer online dealing. Personally, I use a broker on an execution-only basis and because I started small (with 1000, 30 months ago),and because I asked for a discount,I got one.
One of the advantages of using a broker is getting longer settlement terms.
    Good luck and enjoy!

www.zecco.com do not charge any commission on your first 40 trades (US markets) per month.
Buy & Sell for nothing, you can't go wrong.

If you´re buying shares whatever the hell you do - DONT buy them through AIB - they charge 100eur for each purchase - I was amazed when I heard this - add 1% stamp duty and a 1000eur investment costs 130eur
10% of the share value is fees !!!!
there are way better offers out there
    100eur is a serious rip-off
take my advice shop around and there are plenty of places who wont charge more than 25-30 eurs per buy.
