South America Shenanigans?

    Hi everyone,

I'm in South America until 4th August and I am looking for things to do. I'm based out of Porto Alegre until 17th July, after which I plan to head down to see Buenos Aires and Montevideo, before returning to Rio to watch the end of the Pan-American Games before I fly back home.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for my current location, in the Southern State of Rio Grande do Sul? The only thing definitely on my intinerary so far is Foz do Iguacu, which I hope to blitz for 3 days this weekend, but if anyone else has travelled in this area and can recommend lesser known attractions it would be appreciated!

For the second part of my stay in South America, does anyone have any suggestions how best to fill the 10 days I can afford to spend travelling around Buenos Aires and Montevideo? Is there anything worthwhile doing within a few hours of these cities?

And finally, does anyone have suggestions about Rio? Good hostels to stay in, good bars (I've heard that the Irish bar Shenanigans is quite fun), sights to see besides the obvious ones etc. I'm also a bit worried about security as I'll have my laptop with me for this final stage (a friend will be holding onto it in Porto Alegre until then).

    Obrigado!
