US & Canada: Cheapest Way

I wanted to plan a multi-stop holiday in the US & Canada. I'm not too worried about accomodation, I was wondering would it be best to do it all through a travel agent package deal or what about hostels? Would you save a huge amount by doing this? Would there be any problem with immigration if you were hostelling instead of having paid booked & paid for?
Does anyone know any sites that give advice about hostels? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank You
