Hi Guys. I need to replace my broken nifty fifty which I bounced off the floor recently. What's the best place to get one either online or offline, new or used, from a cost and speed of delivery perspective ? I've looked at Kea, URGalaxy and the usual Ebay suspects but I saw someone here mentioning somewhere in Scotland recently ?

I want to avoid Sineads long wait she suffered recently but dont want to pay over the odds for delivery on such a cheap lens.

    Thoughts ?

    Thanks

EUR 85 from B&H incl UPS delivery. You might pay a few bob on import duty, but not much.

€60 on Kea, works out about the same when you put P&P in, but less chance of the custom gremlins finding it coming from HK :)

Cheapest I've seen it here is €130 from the Camera Centre on Grafton street. Everywhere else is €150. Ah I was just unlucky with the postage

John Gunn Cameras on Camden St in Dublin have them in stock for about €130. Was in there during the week picking up some bits and pieces.

No shipping and handling, import duty or postage costs if you have to return it :) The Nikon 50mm is €100 from Digital Rev and again about €130 from Gunn's. Hardly worth the saving for all the risk.

Sometimes I think we need to support our own or we'll end up with no specialist camera shops that we can wander into, have a gawk and an intelligent photo conversation with the guys behind the counter. I'm not purer than the driven snow by anymeans, but I buy what I can here,

    Dave

I would buy what I can here too, but realisticly, I don't see why I should be paying so so much more, especially with the benefits of Mack warranties. I got my 24-70L & Off Camera Flash Cord online for €700 cheaper than Ireland. I got my 5D & Grip €2000 cheaper than Ireland. Then I went to buy my hand strap in Ireland, which I thought would be quite cheap, considering it's €4.50 online... Got quoted prices from €45 up.

I'll support our own when they support us. If that means having an intelligent photo conversation with Albert via email, so be it.

I have to agree with Al on this. I don't need any intelligent photo conversations with anyone who is effectively ripping me off, especially when I can have them online here, on flickr, or with my intelligent photographer friends.

This will be the second fifty I've bought, both of which I bought (or will buy) online. Same applies to my other lenses and my camera. Once I have a valid warranty for the expensive gear, price and speed of delivery are my only real considerations.

    Bang on.

Ian Kerso is the guy in Scotland.

You'll get it on any of the German sites for 70-80 €, delivered in about 3 days and no vat worries.

thinking of getting one of these for my 400D aswell. im in munich at the moment and theyre selling them for €100 in Saturn (big electronics store) but i just spotted a calumet photo shop on my way back to my hotel this evening so they might have it for cheaper. Also the BG-3 battery grip is only €55 in Saturn...thats a pretty good deal isnt it?
