Yep, Frank does a lot of aircraft pics and some them are mind blowing too. Will be interesting to see what lens he has now he got rid of his Sigma 50-500.

They do look pretty good - does anyone know the best route to take driving in from dublin - where to park and observe from ?

hehe! Taking the boat to Kerry I believe.

Oh well would you look at that!! *searches for the warm fuzzy feeling I should be getting for my 'plan B' status* hehe :D

Get on the main Limerick road... go as far as RacketHall in Laois and then get set to turn off for Roscrea, heading in the Loughrea direction. Then just follow the signs for Galway.

Parking in the city will be a nightmare but there are a few places in walking distance of Salthill (10mins maybe) near the University side of the city even.

Sure if you decide to come down let us know! We'll drag Mike out of his VIP pit yet!

Cheers - I reckon I might head down. Anyone reckon it would make more sense to go to the airport and catch them taking off and landing rather than through a (crap) long lens ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭odonnell

if you arent interested in the display and actually seeing the undercarriage of a plane in manouevers, smoke trails, and general good flying - then head to the landing strip for sure....

personally though id be heading to the display as catching 10 planes all at the same angle, and in single file (one at a time) wouldnt seem interesting! :)

I would also hazard a guess that any photographers would be interested in the static displays, and the people?

The man from Delmonte speak to the truth.

Last year I only used my 70-200 and got some fantastic shots of it all so you dont need no penis extension lens to get anything decent as they do get that close to you.

Well - not necessarily. If you dont have a zoom lens worth a crap then getting shots with a prime from different angles at take off and landing (or parked up/refuelling etc) that show detail (rather than pictures of munge from a distance) could be an idea. Just a thought.

You wouldnt be able to get close enough to get details Gerard. Your best bet would be to head to the show area itself, trust me you can get some fairly good shots there as they are really that close to you.

Hey Mike ... I could be tempted ... any chance of a lift and a bed on Saturday night after the Guy Gowan thing ... and then another to the station on Sunday after the show ... if its not asking too much :o

That forecast is for Dublin which as useful as it is, it isnt!! ;):p

EDIT - sorry didnt realise it already covered/highlighted above!!

I didn't think there'd be any difference, but, um, the one for Galway is actually worse...

    http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/dayforecast.asp?zipcode=Galway&day=4

I trust metcheck, it's been very accurate down to the time of day over the past couple of months when I've been watching the weather at the weekends. Not sure about some made up report from an Apple Mac though :p

    ouch!

Its actually proved to be fairly accurate, well I usually only note it for 3 days at a time kind of thing. Wunderground does seem to suggest 14degrees and some cloud cover for Sunday. Hmmmm.

Sure this is Ireland anyway! you can never tell.

and as for the West having a totally different weather system to you lot in The Pale, well we do! Sure there was one day last week that twas all rain and dreary misery up there and we had glorious weather! Its pot luck on this VAST Isle of ours ;)

the weather widget is frighteningly accurate. Manys the time I've been sitting at my desk, the widget said it was raining, I looked outside to bright sunshine and not 5 mins later it pissed rain. Either it's hugely accurate, or Steve Jobs is on the roof with a watering can.

Hmmmnnn ... I'm sensing a road trip ... but TBH ... I'm not going down if it is pissing down ... so lets do another met check the day before and decide then ...

Morlar, Darren ... we'll be seeing each other at the Guy Gowan event Sat ... lets talk then about car pooling and weather ...

I was thinking of going down the night before but since the event does not kick off until after 3pm there seems little reason ...

Any of ye coming down Saturday then? Or just down and back on Sunday?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

I reckon to be heading down sunday early with plenty of bottled water in reserve.

    Just saw this :

    "
Anti-war protesters are due to picket this weekend’s Salthill International Airshow which will feature the first Irish visit of the US Air Force’s elite Thunderbirds squadron.

The Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW) will be holding a ’99 Red Balloon’ peace event 3km away in Galway City.

“GAAW is inviting all avid anti-war kiteflyers to attend its peaceful demonstration,” a spokesman said today.
    "
    on breakingnews.ie - http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/mhkfojsnmhmh/

Oh and they are expecting 100,000 people to attend (the airshow not the baloons for peace thingie).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Ohhh but what if a balloon hits the 'windscreen' of the plane hehe!! that could be dangerous! i hope nothing crashes on my house :( lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,735 ✭✭✭mikeanywhere
