New job dilemma

A small dilemma here. I have just gotten a new job, for which I am required to attend a medical. Now, I have nothing to hide, but stipulated to the recruitment agency that I wanted to make sure that I pass this before I hand in my notice to my current job. Just for completions' sake. They have come back after consulting with the new company, urging me to hand in my notice and saying that I have nothing to worry about. As I understand it, they want me to start asap.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? I dont want to antagonise the company before starting..

I wouldn't hand in my notice until I had an offer in writing from my new employer. Do you have it in writing?

Personally, I wouldn't trust the word of a recruitment agency.

Yes, I failed to mention that, I have a softcopy of the contract, signed by the HR manager. Is this acceptable?

What's your notice period? And would the few days between doing it before the medical and after really make a difference? For your own peace of mind I'd go with your head on this one.

keep in mind the recruiter will want you to start asap so he gets his commission asap.

Simply explain that the sooner they organise medical, the sooner you will start.....thats not unreasonable - just be sure employer understands you forsee no probs

Have you signed the contract? Sign the contract first and foremost. I assume that the job is conditional based on a satisfactory medical. Just to be safe, I would get your own medical done prior to the company medical / signing of the contract (in the event that you're not allowed choose your own doctor). That way you know where you stand and you can be safe in the knowledge that you will pass the company medical.
