as i write this i have been playing cards nearly non stop since last friday! i am completley ****ed . the pattern since firday has been ,finish work(where im on line most of the day playing anyway),go home shower ,eat, go online till about 4/5, go home go to bed for a few hours kip , back up into work struggle through bearly till home time , into the shower ,grub, red bull, and out the door , same on sunday (bar the work), this was replaced by a little more sleep thankfully and then more cards of the internet variety,(im on the best run of my life at the moment), finish up sunday day morning at 3ish, drive home into bed and back up at 8 . Again i maintain the image of normal human being until 6 and then bang straight into it again this time no shower ,no home, no grub , no fore play at all straight down to it till about 11 on the computer (i have my first losing session on line in about 3 weeks $500), i then decide to head into the macau where i play a cash game till about 4ish i recover my online loss in a very mild round of each game . i fall into bed at 4.30ish and fall into a half sleep where i dream im playing pinapple with devil and gandi and were using murry mints for chips ! any way im rudely awoken at 8.30 by my phone alarm and so begins another week . im seriously ****ed and even though im on a rich vein of form of late im consirering taking a break from the game as it is totally consuming my life at the moment. my question is am i mad to be considering this as im on such a good roll ?
    thanks in advance

your exausting yourself. cut down on your hours. they say bad downswing doesnt go away by simply not playing, so a good one won't either.

and i doubt you look too great with the lack of sleep you've described.

it sounds like you may have a gambling problem, definitely consider quitting gambling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,501 ✭✭✭BrokenArrows

    first things first.

    USE PARAGRAPHS

The decision is really simple. If you are not enjoying the way you are doing things at the moment change them.

You dont enjoy playing poker like you do all the time?
Then take a break or just cut down.

The fact that your on a good roll should not make any difference. The way your playing at the moment it seems to me that if you go on a losing streak you will donk your roll. I base this on the fact that you seem to be playing poker whenever you have free time and if you drop a good few buyins you will keep going back to playing cause your not used to spending your time doing anything else.

Take a week off. Get outside. Then get back to your game.

yep, sound like good advice in principle "broken arrows" but its hard to walk away from a good run. espically when they are hard to engineer. that said i think im going to take a week off starting from wed! "mr plough" thanks for your feed back though i disagree with you i always look good! :D

I don't see the dilemma. There's no need to consider quitting poker and there's no need to destroy your immune system by playing constantly. Just get some rest, take a break, and come back to it.

make hay while the sun shines !!

just take a break when you hit the wall (say 3 loosing sessions in a row or something) personaly i wouldn't stop when your confidence is sky high - i would however take a day in the bed of something that your probably need

As ntlbell said, what exactly do you want us to say here?
If it's a problem for you then get some personal discipline and cut down on the amount of hours you play. You sure this isn't just a brag about running well recently?

I was being serious AF! I think a weeks break sounds like a very good thing when you have been playing too much. If you have trouble taking a week off or make excuses about why you shouldn't do it ("am i mad to be considering this as im on such a good roll ?") there is a chance you really do have a problem. If you have the discipline to just decide to tell yourself not to play for a week you'll probably be OK.

Can I ask a possibly dumb question, where are you going out to play internet Poker in the middle of the night?? Why don't you just play at home?

Also, you need sleep or it will begin to effect your work/job/career, which I assume is important.

Also RoundTower may just have a point, it shouldn't be any great thing to take a week off to let your body recover, the "addiction", if that's what it is, may not be currently affecting your wallet, but it's almost certainly affecting other areas of your life, which in turn could easily end up affecting your Wallet and your life in general and in much more significant ways then Poker losses, even if you somehow manage your BankRoll effectively. Just something to be wary of.

mm i think you'll find you were in fact eh... kidding..

steo5. work is not number one priority in my life so i dont mind putting it far down the list,.

family; well my beyonce is in lithunaina for a month so thats why im playing like a vampire and getting away with it. that will however stop when "she who must be obeyed returns next week"

24 hour internet; is my place of preferance to play sure it adds an extra rake to the equation but its a better enviornment for me personaly i always find i focus better when im not playing atr home

thanks for your advice on taking a break and im now resigined to the fact that i will stop play for one week after tonight session.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Ste05

Well I presume work will become a pretty high priority if you no longer have a job??

But if it's only this week or so while the missus is away, then go for it, I say, I'll often go on week long drinking benders when the cats away,(doesn't happen nearly enough though ;)) whatever floats your boat really. I thought this was a regular thing...

Re: the Internet Cafe's, whatever works for you, although personally with no Poker Tracker I wouldn't want to play any significant amount of Poker without proper records of my play, win-rates etc. etc.

Yeah, that peaked my interest too, I'm all for inclusion and think it should be encouraged here on the Poker forum...

I take it the siobhan thing is an inside joke, going back to when sitout pretented to be a girl playing in that cork club, and someone dug up a pi thread where sitout described "herself" as a forty guy looking to cut down on his weight or something.

I used to spend far too much time reading this forum...
