Anyone regretting buying a PS3?

I am kinda regretting getting the PS3, mainly because it only ever gets used for folding@home.

I find that pretty much everything it does, the 360 does better, or just easier.
There are only 3 points that I can not fault on it,
    1) it does a great job running folding@home,
    2) it is a cheap Bluray player,
    3) I can run Linux on it.

But apart from the Bluray, which I am not really that interested in, I can run folding on my GPU almost as fast and I can put Linux on my PC for free, so I am starting to regret the €700 I spent.

Plus I currently can't use it as it has decided to lock-up since the 1.81 update, all I can get it to do is power on and power off, even after a complete re-set (ie; holding 'down' the power switch)

Anyone else have any mis-givings about their investment?

i agreee its really really bad. i hate it. its out months & there is no effort from sonys point on trying to improve the ps3- there store is empty! they arent even releasing any games. the 360 releases a game every friday. " NOW THATS LIVING"

No. I'm getting more use of it than you are (thank you, Warhawk beta), but even if I were only using it in the way you currently are, I view consoles as 5+ year investments. For example, my Wii has been untouched for months now, but I don't really regret the purchase because I know there'll be numerous games in the future that I want to play on it.

It tends to take a little time for consoles to ramp up on the content side. We're only about 6 months into PS3's life...we've had a quiet period on PS3 lately, but I think we're beginning to see the end of that with Ninja Gaiden, The Darkness, Singstar et all arriving shortly. From there on out it looks pretty gravy for the rest of the year.

I'm delighted with mine and not regretting buying it at all.

The comment about 'no effort' from Sony is a bit unfair TBH. Sure they could do more but IMHO they are doing OK. Not great, but OK.

Only out in Europe 3 months, 3 FW updates, media streaming, remote play, classic games, decent downloadable games, PSone games on the way soon, Tekken DR for €10, GTHD Concept for free. The store is only "empty" because what some individuals want isn't in it.

Plus if you go to the minor bother of setting up US, HK or Japanese accounts you could have demos of Armoured Core 4, Ninja Gaiden Sigma & Folklore/Folksoul to mention three. But aside from that the other stores aren't all that some talk them up to be.

And unless people are a 'single genre game type', there are quite a few decent games.

funny you mention the ps3 store, since this friday they start rolling out PSone games and some new PSN-exclusive stuff (stardust HD + calling all cars next week i think). xbl had the same issues at it's beginnings too remember.

as for the OP, is it possible the gripe isn't with the ps3 itself, but moreso because yours is borked?

Indeed, and they've given a pretty clear roadmap of where they're going, and the effort there is pretty obvious (i.e. Home, the credibility they're giving to digital distribution in games like Warhawk, SOCOM, LBP etc. their embrace of user created content in LBP, Unreal Tournament 3 etc.). The dedication to free lagless online gaming via dedicated servers in first party games. But yeah, if I had to single out one 'deliverable' to date that demonstrates effort on Sony's part, it's been the firmware updates which have come thick and fast.

Also, I think the poster you're responding too must easily forget the 'quiet' stretches we had on XBLA, when all you might get on a given Wednesday was a bloody card pack. Not much, if any better than those 'trailers-only' PSN updates. XBLA right now is great, but don't forget where they were coming from. The PS Store will mature too. And another thing I'd point out on that front has been Sony's approach to pricing, where they're clearly making a huge effort to be attractive. Their approach there is miles better than their competitors - better value, and not trying to artificially restrain third parties and their free content in order to engineer markets and maintain costs for the the user (i.e. see MS's tussles with Epic over DLC in Gears of War, and now, their attitude to user created content on Live compared to Sony's, which again is coming to a head on another Epic title, UT3). Microsoft has not exactly been the customer's friend here.

No i love mine it gets as much play as the 360 just depending on what mood im in if i want to play a shooter i play black or resistence if i want to play footy i play pro evo if i want a fighting game i play tekken or god of war .

Then if i want a realistic shooter i pop on the 360 for ghost recon or splinter cell , if i want to race then its Cmcrae or Forza .

Its my favourite thats not to say the xbox is bad i just prefer my ps3

Isnt the point of an investment to get some kind of profitable return ?

I am currently loving my PS3. If I'm not playing resistance online then I delve into my stash of PS2 games and Blu Ray movies-Apocalypto is awesome in HD.
I would be even happier with it if Sony would upgrade the backwards compatability to include Hitman Blood Money so I dont have to gig out the
    PS2 every time I want a bash!

I actually agree with his opinion, but I don't need to see it in every thread about the PS3 and/or the Xbox 360.
Perhaps you should spend a bit more time on boards.ie before you earn the right to start judging it?
Btw, do you not see you are actually doing what you claim to be against? Or does it only count when you are looking for something to jump on and criticise?

Well, I'm a whore for new technology and launch purchases. Perhaps I undervalue my money in some respects :)

On PS3, though, I feel I've got my money's worth already. I've had a HD projector for a couple of years now, and have been waiting for Blu-ray for all that time. If I didn't buy my PS3, I'd likely have bought a more expensive standalone. On the games side, I've had enough to keep me coming back reasonably regularly..I've bought 4 blu-ray titles and 6 or 7 downloadable titles, in about 6 months, and enjoyed them all, so I don't think that's too bad going for a new system.

As I see it, though, with pretty much any system, even if you're buying at launch that initial upfront cost for the hardware is likely to be ulimately swallowed by the amount you invest in it over the next x years in games, online etc. For most people, that upfront investment isn't going to be the bulk of the cost of their investment in the platform.
    SeantheMan wrote:

It's just the store on the network. It's called the playstation store. I guess you're signed up for the online service..if you are, just look under the network icon.

I also play motorstorm,FEAR,call of duty, splinter cell which sucks by the way and my brother is hooked on oblivion. I bought 11 blu rays, and the upscaler has brought new life to my 300+ DVD collection.
Thats €630 well spent you tool.

Yeah The Darkness is 360 aswell.

Nothing much in the next two months in the way of exclusives I don't think. Ah well there's always christmas I suppose :(

I believe The Darkness is out next week on 360 but PS3 version delayed for
a month. Just had a quick search online and it's looking like the 360 version
should be region free and cheap at €33 on playasia. If only the Ps3 version was
out first, I'd have a reason to wipe the dust off mine!

Well, depending on taste..the higher profile releases in the next couple of months would probably be Ninja Gaiden Sigma, The Darkness and Singstar. If you are willing to import, you could add Folklore, Hot Shots Golf 5. It's possible Lair be out by early August also.

The new eyetoy camera will be out in the next month or two also.

I see where you are coming from, but I was disappointed with it long before it actually stopped working.

Kev2006 - I wasn't expecting you to have any regrets;)

The only good point I can say about the PS3 (as an owner) is that it is a cheap BluRay player..... thats pretty much it, sure they have added functionality to it since launch, but if I am to compare it to the other two this gen consoles it is lacking in pretty much all areas, even in BluRay playback, as I have a TV capable of 720P and it insists in outputting in 1080i. Why should I be punished with this fuzzier image, just because I don't have a Sony 1080p 'TrueHD' tv!!??!! And even gettin it to output in 1080i took 15 minutes of messing around with the desplay settings.

Now I won't be getting rid of mine (as long as I can get it working again) as I still find it somewhat useful, but it's short comings when compared to the competition are just glaring.

The only reason to be for this console as opposed to any other is if you want Bluray, or some of the limited exclusive games. Personally I somewhat like F1 and MotorStorm, but they don't entice me enought to keep going back and playing them over and over again.

Yes, Folklore/Folksoul is available from the Japanese store only at the moment.

Now, I know it will be different with English menus and dialogue, but from what I have seen so far, I didn't like it at all.

I could point out ways in which the other two are lacking versus PS3. This seems to be a matter of perspective. PS3 isn't a superset of other consoles' functionality, but neither are other consoles a superset of PS3's.
even in BluRay playback, as I have a TV capable of 720P and it insists in outputting in 1080i.

No it doesn't, not since 1.80. It scales BD to 720p now.

Looking through to December, it doesn't seem like such a limited exclusive lineup to me, but that may be a matter of taste. If you look at what they showed at the last gamers' day event, there's plenty of exclusive stuff coming this year, and more importantly a lot of it looks pretty great.

Well its been value for money for the Snake, as I have bought loads of Blu-Ray's for it, not really using it for games at the moment, use more the 360 I have to say, but don't like the 360 for HD DVD movies, find it very noisey.
So no from my prespective, I'm very happy that I bought it.

Very happy with the PS3 and totally hooked on Oblivion. Also watching shedloads of blu-rays, Mission Impossible 3 looks spectacular.

I find Game Stop is the best for Blu Rays, they do a lot of titles for €17.99.

Rambo First blood picture quality is awesome for such an old film.
Blackhawk down also looks much better than its dvd version as does The Departed and both terminator films. The descent also looks great on blu ray.

That's pretty decent. I've been looking for Babel, I wonder if they have it. Saw it in Virgin for 35 euro, so was going to buy it online, but I might have a more thorough look around.

I got Planet Earth on blu-ray a week ago..really top class stuff. Amazing footage.

Play.com are not a very good source for game release dates, they regularly have incorrect estimates or don't update them.

Well I find cheapest on the Net, thing you have to watch is that they will play on a EU PS3, a lot of them will, If you want an European Babel check out sendit.com http://www.sendit.com/video/item/7001000133424 26.99 including delivery. Or get the US version, which will play over here for 23.11 from here http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=772790

Picture quality is excellent as long as you have a decent size HD LCD or Plasma. I won't be buying any more DVD's unless they are on either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

Cool, didn't know that, so now I can actually get a decent image from a BD, though it should have been standard from the get go.

I still have a very long list of flaws that annoy me about the PS3, which is why it is the only console I have ever bought at launch that disappointed me.

The biggest and most immeditally apparent of these was the fact that when I got it home and opened the box there was no HD A/V cable bundled with the console, this has got to be a huge source of disappointment for anyone when the get there new toy home.

And since that moment the list of failings and disappointments has just grown, with very few nice suprises to be had. One of which is the new 720P support.

certainly haven't regretted buying it, have had many hours out of resistance and online is a lot of fun, motorstorm has had a lot of play from me too and well oblivion has taken over my life recently. I can't make comparisons with the 360 as i've never had one.

bluray also looks fantastic and you can't argue with some upscaling either but the one unexpected bonus i've found has been video streaming. streaming avi's from my pc has made my life easier, though in fairness both the 360 and the wii can do this too. still i likes.

plus i'm looking forward to 3.50oe for my psp and then I can see what i can do with remote play.

All in all, i'm more than happy with my ps3. plus somewhere in the distance there's mgs 4, res evil 5, assassins creed and gta vi, littlebigplanet and home to look forward to.

I don't have one and I can see why people would regret buying it now, but the fact of the matter is, the ps3 is a more powerful console in every department and when a year or two pass, I believe we will see the ps3 come into a world of it's own and that is when I will be trading in the 360 for the ps3. But as of now, it's a 360 world...my only gripe is pro evo 6 is such a sham on the 360 now because they brought out an online update which results in me getting disconnected constantly from xbox live when playing pro evo...****ing konami, they must be on drugs...idiots

Actually the 360's GPU is more powerful than the PS3's.

If they're releasing those games soon they're in production now. Anybody got a list of the names? I'd say it's probably a pile of games like the Xbox Live Arcade games that the Xbox 360 has. Some of them are good though.
