Need basic/free software to edit out adverts from TV recordings

I recently bought myself a Hauppauge WinTV HVR1100 card, and whilst it's a doddle to record with, it doesn't come with any edit software for cutting out adverts etc. The recordings are output to .mpg files and I would also like the option to convert these to .avi files. Any suggestions?
