i didnt think this was suitable for the jobs and work forum so mods move it if needed

I left my job 6 weeks ago- They didnt have enough hours for me and i was bringing home 150e a week- which i couldnt live on. When i left my boss said hed send my p45 on to me- I only got it last week.

When i was working there i was being emergency taxed up to the time i left-One week(And im not joking) i was taxed 75e. Anyway long story short im owed 400e in tax.

Problem is my new employer wants my P45, but i know if i give it to him i wont be able to claim any of the tax back.I explained to my new boss that i was waiting to hear back from my old boss bout my p45 and he said fine(It was true up to a week ago) I contacted the revenue THE DAY i got my p45 and asked for a p60 to claim back my tax.Its a week later and theres no form yet.

If i do give my P45 to my boss will i still be able to claim back the tax im owed or will i be refused it because im working?

I know it sounds pure scabby but 400e is 400e ya know and i owe it to my Landlord who left me off with the rent for a few weeks as some weeks there i was getting no money at all from them as i had no hours that week

If you give your P.45 to your new employer they should refund you the tax in your next pay packet.

Nothing scabby about it at all, ring the revenue up and explain the situation to them, I have found them to be extremely helpful and friendly when I've had to deal with them (quite recently) not like the bunch of unhelpful w*nkers they were years ago !

when you give your P45 to your new boss you will automatically get your tax back but you will have to ring the tax office and tell them you want it in cash and not tax credits - which is what happened to me :(

I second this, they seem to have gotten their act together of late.

AFAIK, you only need to supply your new employer with parts 2 & 3 of your P45 so you could probably return part 1 to your local tax office to sort out the emergency tax.

Otherwise you can use https://www.revenue.ie/wiclo/details.jsp to find the phone and district number for your local tax office

EDIT: Oh yeah, BTW, your P60 is sent out by your previous employer also.

Your new employer will refund it as soon as you give them your P45 and they process it. Going to the tax office is actually way more hasssle. Your last employers accountants sound like cowboys.

OT, but when I got my first job I was on emergency tax.

I was told that the government kept this money in a special fund in case we ever ended up in a War and needed money for the Defence forces fast.
Seeing as 1939-1945 is known as the Emergency in Ireland, I fully believed this.

Oh, to be young and naive :D
