Free-weights and form

 Just back from the gym where I had a rude awakening.

I have been working out at home for the last while (with decent results) and have all the basic equipment I need (heavy bag, bench, dumbbells, barbell, bar in the door for chins).

But after asking for help from one of the instructors, turns out my form and technique for most of the free-weight exercises was nothing short of terrible (my words, he put it more lightly).
I asked if I should go back to the machine exercises but he suggested I just lower the weight on the exercises and work on form, tempo and breathing etc before making them heavier again.

It's all corrected now tho, and I might just start using the gym more than usual, but a shock all the same when thinking about the amount of time I probably wasted in what I thought were good sessions.

Anyway ... just thought I'd put it out there ...

Anyone else ever had similar experiences?
